PCOS and I'm dyin'

Emotionally, that is..............I have suffered from this dreaded condition since I began my period at 16 (isn't that kinda late?) and have had problems ever since.  I was told that there are tons of cysts on my ovaries, which is why I'm practically bald and grow a beard like a man (I'd look like ZZ Top if I din't use Nair twice a week).  The hair on my face grows incredibly fast (mustache and beard to boot).  The hair on my head is doing its fair share of shedding daily, but since the hair is not being replaced, I'm losing it constantly.  I have cried so much about it, I can't cry anymore.  I guess my next turn is to wigs.  If it was a situation where I knew it would eventually grow back, I think I could handle it, but it seems to be reverseable since nothing I've tried has helped.  My dr has put me on 2000 grams of Metformin daily, which makes me sick as a dog if I don't eat enough.  That's difficult because I'm rarely hungry and with a stomach that only holds 4 oz of food, I'm having to almost gag to get enough food in me to "buffer" my stomach from the medication.  I've tried biotin, but it doesn't seem to help, but I didn't try it for long, so maybe I didn't give enough time to really show results.  I wish I could have a procedure to have the cysts erradicate, but since it's a "syndrome", that wouldn't help either.  I guess I just needed to vent.   Thanks for listening.

F*** PCOS! Seriously. I hate it! Think of all the things women don't want: acne, weight gain, facial hair, infertility, thinning hair, dark patches of skin on the face. Talk about a curse! Grrrrr!!

I feel you on the facial hair. I used to have a LOT of dark peach fuzz on the sides of my face so I got laser hair removal. The laser treatments got rid of all of it! Now, I get stray hairs on my neck and chin, but those are easy to pluck or wax off.

I hope your hair grows back. Sorry that I don't have any recommendations for that. I'm taking Biotin right now, but I have no idea if that's going to help. (I'm still waiting for the hair loss to start since I'm almost 3 months out from surgery).

Thanks amylucha

It’s so good to know someone can relate.  I’ve been thinking about the laser treatments and am still considering them, but they tend to be on the expensive side where I live, but I'll definitely keep an eye for any type of good deals on them.  I've heard of others trying it and really liking it as well.   I hope you don't have any hair loss (and there are a few on this forum that are lucky enough not to have had any), but if you do, hopefully it will be minimal and only last for a short time. Best of luck to you as well.

Thanks

Berta

I had a hysterectomy in 2009, I had fibroid tumors. Nine months later I kept getting very painful cysts on my ovaries, so i went in and had them removed.  I am now on the Vivelle dot "hormone patch".  I got very lucky that my Dr. chose that one for me.  Ive heard it has something to do with bioidentical hormones.  Anyways, ever since I had my first child "twenty five years ago" my hair thinned and never got thick again.  Fast forward twenty five years later, after I had my ovaries removed and got on the patch, after about a year I, and a few people noticed my hair really growing and getting thicker.  It was awesome.  I know it is that patch.  I dont know your age and if you are done having children, but I have to say having my ovaries removed was one of the best things I have ever done.  No more pain, hair looks great.  It is a little hard that five months after having the DS my hair is all falling out horribly, but I have faith that with time, and my patch my hair will again be great, but until then I just ordered foxylocks extententions......lol

Hi dustycroy

I never heard of the Vivelle dot "hormone patch".  I don’t have children, so the infertility part of PCOS is really tough for me, but at least if I have something that’s closer to my body’s own chemistry, as in bioidentical hormones, that might be of some help.  I first heard about it from Suzanne Somers and was quite interested, but the patch is new to me.  The idea of not having to take pills seems to be a God-send as well.  Maybe I should look further into the bioidentical as maybe it could offer some hope to at least slow it down even if it doesn’t reverse it.

Thanks for the info - I was thinking that maybe I should just go and talk to my regular ob/gyn for more info and possibly to obtain a prescription if need be.

There are some very cute wigs out there - why don't you try one?

BTW I love your siggy quote about embracing each other ;-)

Thanks huneypie,

Yes, I'm starting to look into wigs and I've been seeing some nice ones out there.  The extensions seems to look more natural so I'll probably go with those.  I know there are those here who are already wearing them, and I have no doubt they look fantastic. I'm just having a hard time adjusting because my hair was always so long and thick.  You know, a woman's hair is her crowning glory, but I'll learn to get used to them I'm sure.  It's all apart of this journey that we're all on, you know.

By the way, I think the name "huneypie" is just adorable.   :)

Thanks, honeypie was already gone even though I've not found them on this site. Maybe they deactivated.
