Have you looked in to using a service like http://www.shipito.com ? It's not worth it to the UK but I know someone in Australia and it works out great for them... just a thought.

we really don't have much choice. Not possible to get dry vitamins in Canada. Don't worry about the taxes - you would have to pay these wherever you bought them - in Canada or imported. Here is how I manage my shipping costs.
I buy what I can in Canada first - Costco supplies my calcium citrate, multi vitamins, B complex, Proferrin, selenium, folate, probiotic etc.
I get all of my US purchases from one place - Vitalady. If i try to break it up to try to save a dollar here or there on price, the shipping cost more than outweighs the savings. Vitalady has the right supplements in the right form, at the right levels we need.
I plan ahead and just make one very large order each year, so pay one shipping fee.
I make sure I order well before I need the supplements so I do not have to use a faster priority courier. The delivery may take a couple of weeks, but OK since I have planned ahead.
if I have a choice of two similar products, I stick with the one in the plastic bottle, rather than glass so lower shipping weight.
Other ideas..
If you live near the border, you could use a US mail drop, or have the package delivered to a US friend.
if you know any other DSers who live nearby, consolidate your order to combine shipping
