Constipation help, yes, because we malabsorb fats and that would make the vitamins go out of the body with it. That's why we take dry form fat soluble vitamins. I think oil for fat soluble vitamins is for normies is correct but I don't think that works for DSrs and RNYrs.  Thoughts?

Taking vitamins that are fat or oil based is not good they will run through us but we still have to have HIGH fat in our diets because we mal-absorb fat and your body has to HAVE fat in its system in order to absorb certain vitamins. If you are understanding me. There are certain vitamins that require you to have fat intake.

Fat malabsorption

After BPD-DS you will be at high risk for many nutritional deficiencies. Because fats are now the most difficult of foods to digest, fat malabsorption is a frequent problem. This, in turn, causes a problem with the absorption of certain vitamins. Vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat-soluble which means they dissolve in fat when they are inside your body. If you cannot absorb fat, you will not be able to fully absorb or store these vitamins.

You need vitamin D to help absorb calcium, so you can also run into problems with low calcium after BPD-DS. This is a very real concern, especially for women who have a higher rate of osteoporosis (weak bones). Studies show that four years after BPD-DS, about two-thirds of people will be low in vitamins A, D, and K, and half will be low in calcium.

Fat malabsorption may cause:

  • Steatorrhea. Undigested fats cause loose and frequent bowel movements that are often hard to control and are foul smelling and accompanied by lots of gas.

  • Vitamin deficiencies and related diseases. Symptoms of fat-soluble vitamin deficiencies include rashes, bruising or bleeding, night blindness, and weak bones prone to fracture.

  • Calcium deficiency.  Low levels of body calcium because of vitamin D deficiency can cause bone fractures.

  • Vitamin E deficiency. This is rare but can occur with fat malabsorption. Symptoms include poor nerve function that causes numbness or tingling, muscle weakness, poor vision, and decreased ability to fight infections.

By taking dry fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E & K) we overcome a lot of the deficiencies they saw in earlier days of the DS, but we still have practices preaching low fat diets. I figure we should eat fats and oils to keep our bodies healthy but not take our supplements when were eating something particularly fatty because we'll malabsorb the fat and the vitamins at the same time. It's a balancing act.

I saw a diagram once about how having fat in your body helps the transport of the fat soluble vitamins.
So , no fat based vitamins and probably not a good idea to do the vitamins with a high fat meal but definitely another plus for keeping fat in your diet.

Another poke in the nose of those people that still recommend a low fat diet to DS'ers.

And, of course, no one wants to be constipated.............
