Roux-en-Y Surgery **Then Also** Having Duodenal Switch

Oh HELL NO - that is NOT what it's like to have the DS.

I have a giant poo in the morning and I"m pretty cleaned out for the day as a rule.  Alli has you running to the ****ter every time you eat a spoonful too much fat.  That is not the way we live.

Whoever suggested that has no clue about DS

lol  What Val said. Done before I go to work every morning. The first month was "interesting" but things calm down after that.

I hope they bring Dr Sudan in quickly, he seems to be the only one there that has a clue about the DS. The dieticians and other staff are pretty hopeless from all I've read.

Where did you have your surgery? Do you mean Duke's staff is helpless?  The dietitian there is pretty good, straight forward and stern. She met with me for an hour and I wasn't even there to see her. But I also worked with her in 2008.

Duke's staff knows RNY and I guess VSG but they really haven't adapted well to the DS and they want to preach what they think they know rather than listen to DSrs who are living it. Hearsay, but that's my take on them.

I had my surgery with Dr Elariny here near DC. I had to fight him on taking Vitalady's vitamin plan but he's ok with it now that he sees my labs and has spoken to Michelle and definitely supports her regarding dry vitamin D3. The last 2 dieticians and the very first one were good. They've been on board with low carbing and accepting that small snacks or meals every 2 hours is a good thing for DSrs. They support those of us that need protein supplements and don't push us to get off of them if we don't want to. They also understand that many of us need extra fat and oils in our diet and don't go into fits over it even though that is counter to what they were taught to preach at bariatric patients.

I am one of those RNY revisions to the DS. I am so glad I that I was able to have this revision and have no regrets. My surgeon is a fairly unknown to many on this board but is well known and loved thru-out the military community. He was fantastic and I feel very lucky to have been able to have him as my surgeon. He's been a surgeon for 40 years and knows his stuff. Even tho many on here had not heard of him I put my complete trust in him and his ability to do this surgery correctly. He believes the DS to be the platinum standard of weightloss surgeries and wishes they had done them all along instead of the RNY. Do your homework on your surgeon and if you don't feel he is qualified then find someone else. I would think thru Duke they would have someone who is either qualified to do this type of revision or could recommend someone for you.

My Revision was uncomplicated and I recovered well. I have lost 65lbs in 4 months which is pretty average for a revision. I am so much happier having my stomach put back the way it should be. Many of my problems that I had from the RNY have gone away, my food goes down better, no problems with indigestion etc. The poo issues are an adjustment but they get better as time passes. I can definately tell when I have eaten or drank something I shouldn't have had because I will get terrible gas but I am learning!

Good luck with your decision. I know things will go well for you on this journey. Just be wise choices along the journey.

I appreciate your reply Sharron and glad to hear you are doing so well. You know, all of these WLS are so new in general and for the most part there is not enough information to support the long-term results of any one of these in particular, but wouldn; it be nice if they actually could narrow it down to only 2 options. Those obese and then morbidly obese.

Best of luck to you! :)

The DS has been done for over 20 years.

I will bet you my last penny that your doctor is thinking about doing an extended RNY or a Distal RNY or an ERNY on you WHILE LEAVING YOUR POUCH / STOMA alone.

This is nothing like a DS.

The RnY to DS revision is a technically difficult surgery and most of the BEST DS surgeons don't even do it.  They may do a band to DS or a Sleeve to DS but finding someone capabale of doing a RnY to DS revision is not easy.  There are VERY VERY FEW of them.

Get specifics.  I'm not even sure that Sudan does RnY to DS revisions.  Someone would have to let you know that.
