Advice for someone looking at DS

I am considering having the DS instead of the RNY.  I would like to hear from those of you who have had it.  What are you thoughts?  Would you do it again, or go with the more common surgery?  What are some of the  side effects that you have had long term?  Any and all thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hi MusicDiva,

Here are some links to previous threads discussing your question.

Hi,

I would do it again in a heart beat I had an easy recovery and surgery and no issues since. Visit dsfacts.com

I had Duodenal Switch surgery 9 months ago.  I'm very happy with my decision.  The only side effects I've had is bloating - but only if I eat something super greasy or sweet/bready (which is a very rare occasion).  I can eat like a normal person (less of course) and my weight loss is going very well.  I started at 429 lbs, I am now 250 lbs.  That's 179 pounds lost in 9 months.  I no longer have high blood pressure, sleep apnea or severe back and knee pain.  Health wise, my life is so much better than it was just 9 months ago.  No regrets!  If I had to do it over again, I would choose the DS every time.

I'm coming up on my ten-year anniversary, and I'm thankful every DAY I chose the DS. (So are my doctors!) My cholesterol is down to 112, even though I eat a high-fat 'diet', I'm NOT diabetic, even though it runs in both sides of my family, and I'm pretty effortlessly maintaining a loss of 170+ pounds.  pounds! (I say 170+, because my weight does fluctuate about 5 pounds up and down---but at my last doctor visit, I was down 8 pounds.)

I am currently doing a round of iron infusions. My hematologist was unaware of the DS, just assumed I'd had a "gastric bypass" and couldn't understand why my B12 wasn't also in the toilet. When I whipped out the little card I carry that shows my new 'designer' guts, he said "Oh! Now I see!"

No, I have NEVER wished I'd gone with "the more common surgery"---I'm glad I got the superior one instead. (*grin*)

The DS was the perfect surgery for me. I'm not addicted to carbs but I do graze a lot. No regrets at all.

It has been a total success for me. You must commit to a lifetime of supplementation of vitamins and minerals, but you will probably get rid of prescriptions for high blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes. :) You might want to look at DSfacts.com

I would do it again. Wished I had done it years ago.

Absolutely no regrets - there is a reason DS is known as the "Cadillac" of weight loss surgeries.  As long as I follow a few guidelines regarding carbs, get my protein in and take my supplements daily, I don't have any problems.  Nine months post surgery I'm still losing, and my energy level is so much higher than before.  This was the best decision of my life.

Would I trade my DS for  RNY...  OMG NO!  Never, ever, ever!

I waited 2 years for my DS and during that time I could have had the RNY without waiting at all.  Well, I'm glad I waited!  All my coworkers who had the RNY have all gained all their weight back!
