4 Year Surgiversary
It's been 4 years since my DS this month. I am down 230 pounds from my original weight. I still have a significant amount I would like to lose, about another 100 pounds ideally, though I would settle for 75. That still wouldn't put me in the "insurance chart" zone. This sounds like failure, but let me tell you why it isn't:
1. I think about 60 pounds of what I am carrying is skin and fat that won't go away except by surgery. I had a tummy tuck that wiped out 30 pounds in a day. If I had my thighs, butt and arms done, I am willing to bet that would be 60 pounds right there. My body was very big and it was very big for a lot of years and I am 42 years old, so there are certain realities one must face.
2. I have completely reversed diabetes and high blood pressure. I went from insulin and 3 oral meds to mere vitamins and nothing else. That's huge.
3. I am able to walk long distances and do physical things I never dreamed I would be able to do. I also fit into clothes I can buy in relatively normal stores, about a 2X.
Now here's the bad stuff.
1. I have low iron and low Vitamin D and calcium. I have not always taken care of that and I am here today to renew my commitment to working on those issues.
2. I am not eating a good diet and I am seeing it in the diarhea and stomach upset, and I am also here to renew my commitment to better choices, which I think will also help me drop at least 50-60 pounds.
3. I had to have a hernia repaired. The good news is, got the tummy tuck at the same time. That was good but the recovery from that was way worse than the DS.
So today, here and now...I am re-commiting myself to better choices and to dropping another 30 pounds by the end of the year.
For those of you just starting, this is a lifelong journey. But the rewards are great. Good luck!

I'm a newbie and it's always great to hear from vets! Congratulations on your enormous success--both physically and mentally--over the past four years.
You have achieved so much. More importantly, taking a non-biased look inside, you are back on track to health from the inside out.
Inspiring. Thank you for sharing.
I agree with you. Getting rid of the diabetes does make the whole thing worth it. Man, I was so tired of fighting that demon myself.
I still check my blood sugars in the morning (fasting BS) once in a while. Even though I quit losing weight, my blood sugars still dropped. I register normal now - I haven't seen that in 15 years.
