Anyone out there NOT lose weight with the DS?

Hi, I had a sleeve in 2009, and lost a good amount of weight. Then after losing a job, I became sedentary and had some regain. I went from 150 to 180. So I got the DS and lost a grand total of 5 pounds since April 29 2013. That came off in the first week only. Anyone else feel like a total failure? I must admit, I have a stretched out sleeve, and I eat a lot of crap. But still, I expected a bigger loss. The last few days, I stopped night binging so maybe that will help me lose something. Also, I lowered the carbs. Just wondering if I am the only person out there who has failed so miserably. Thanks.

There have been a few folks that regained some after having the DS but they really had to work at it. Keep doing as you're doing now: low carb around 50-70 grams a day, stop binging, and concentrate on protein and fluids. Also, vitamins...lots of vitamins.

Did they not resize your sleeve when they converted you to DS?  I had the sleeve in 2008 and on the 12th I am converting to the sleeve.  They are also resizing my sleeve in the process because of a stretch out part at the top they recognized during my EGD. My doctor actually told me that if i didn't get my sleeve resized, that the DS wouldn't benefit me if i didn't stick EXACTLY on the DS diet from here on out. Although for my kids and family, i plan on doing that.  Could be completely wrong but that's what my surgeon told me.

Figure out how much you need to lose total.  What is your goal weight?  130?  That's 50 lbs you need to lose.  Now measure your weight loss as a percentage of the total you need to lose.  It puts it into perspective.

If you have a lot less weight to lose to get to your goal, then you can't compare yourself to other people losing 25-30 lbs a month.

My surgery was the same day as yours- 4/29/13- but, I was a virgin DS.  I weighed 270.  I have lost 60 lbs.  But I can't even imagine binging!  You must have a very big sleeve....

Hi michelle, sorry to hear things not going as you had planned. I'm not sure I have any answers for you but please don't give up. As a virgin DS'er I get discouraged too. I sometimes think I've stretched out my sleeve because I'm surprised by what I can eat throughout the day (then some days barely nothing). It's a mysterious surgery our DS.

Anyhow, do you have a follow-up soon? Your doctor may be the best person to answer you. Personally, I think your body is settling at the weight it thinks is healthiest for you.The PARAMOUNT issue is that YOU ARE NOT gaining weight. This in itself is champion all the way.

Your situation is very unusual. I have never seen anyone get the DS at 180 pounds.  Your sleeve wasn't resized.  And you aren't admittedly following the DS eating plan.

Do you know the lengths of your common channel and alimentary limb (I hope I got the verbage correct).   Starting at 180, your surgeon may have been conservative in the lengths he used for you.

Who was your surgeon?  Whoever he was, my guess is he had to make some judgement calls because of your unique situation.

Hey Nichol!

I got so curious about you that I looked at your old post on the VSG forum.

It sounds like you have extremely serious binge/compulsive eating issues and due to that you have been totally non-compliant.  In that case as you know no WLS will give you results without following directions at least 50% of the time (we should follow what we need to much more than 50%).

Look we all have food/body issues extremely serious ones but we have to work on the issues - surgery will never give you that.  You need to find a good eating disorders therapist/program - books, tapes,  group support (OA or something like it).  It seemed like you were proud to say "I've lost with being non-compliant", "I've lost with no exercise".  A couple of weeks out, you were eating pizza.  Sorry, you wanna" know the truth - in your face, here it is!  YOU ARE NON-COMPLIANT and it is why you gained weight with the sleeve and  have not lost weight with your DS revision!

Hello, I am no champion at this, no perfectionist!  As a matter of fact, I suck at making the right choices a lot of the times but I don't expect the same results as someone who is doing what they are supposed to do.  This losing and maintaining and keeping healthy takes work and the right choices every single day - yes there is room for not being perfect but we can't do it wrong all the time and expect to have it right.

I say this to you because you can get it right.  You can lose the weight you need to lose eating right for you surgery.  You've got to cut the carbs down, you've got to stop eating what you want  and when you want.  Get on a DS wagon - lots of foods you can take advantage of eating now that you can have lots of fats.

And with that, I will take my own advice of not being compliant enough to achieve the goal I want and need.

I wish you the very best.  You have the power within you to do what is necessary to achieve the weight goal that you want.  Even the DS alone will not do it for you.  Work it Nichol!

Thanks everyone. To answer a few questions, my cc is 100 cm. My surgeon is Dr. Michel Gagner in Montreal. He knew my sleeve was stretched out but we went ahead anyway, since I was not a heavyweight. Yes this is my own doing. And with effort I can probably turn things around. I just wanted to know if there was anyone else who was going through the same thing, just so I don't feel so alone in this failure. I spent so much on the DS that I could never afford to be resleeved. I got to get a grip!! Thanks.
