Fyi for headaches after DS surgery

I posted a while back that my weight loss was at a complete standstill. What I failed to mention was that my dosages of Depakote & Neurontin had been raised exponentially about 4 or 5 months after DS surgery because of migraines & facial neuralgia that I have always had, but which became intractable several months after DS surgery. Both drugs are notorious weight-gaining meds. And had contributed to my huge wt gains in the first place.

About 6 or 7 weeks ago, my PCP referred me to the Swedish Neurological Institute in Seattle where I saw Dr. Anna Wong. Since that visit, I am off the meds, my face & head pain is gone and I am dropping wt effortlessly.

It turns out that my problems (before & after surgery) were nutrition related. The reason the pain got worse after DS is that I had eliminated 3 supplements I used to take that were not on the DS list (200 mg COQ10, 1,000 mg magnesium & butterbur-an herbal xtract that helps migraine) I quit these because they weren't in the right form to digest. But the vitamin that completely stopped the pain is 800 mg of vitamin B2! I now take liquid COQ10, chelated magnesium, petadolix-a gel cap of butterbur-and tiny capsules of B2 in addition to my regular vites. I haven't even needed the Tegretol Dr Wong prescribed in case I needed it.

I hope anyone with headaches &/or neuralgic pain after DS surgery will get to a good neurologist ASAP and not have to suffer as long as I did. Absorption is such a problem for us that having someone who knows the most absorbable forms and right quantities of the supplements is a blessing. I now get chelated forms of minerals along with liquid or chewable vites. I am also careful not to go overboard on quantities as COQ10 can be liver toxic in higher doses as can the wrong formulation of Butterbur.

So life is good now.

So happy for you!  I'm so glad you're getting good advice. My hubby and I take CoQ10 too. He takes oil based 300mg and I take a dry capsule that's 200mg. I haven't had migraines like I did when I was younger. I think mine were dehydration and hormonal. Great info and guidance in your post.
