Protein shakes
Hi all,
I am 5 weeks post-opt band to DS revision. I love the protein shakes when I had my band, now I hate them. They taste gross to me; even when I make it with soy milk. I have become sensitive to sugar and all artificial sweeteners. I am looking for ideas; I get about 50gms of protein from puree food so I know I need to have supplements. I am not sure if I can get it without protein shakes.
Thanks
Try adding a heaping tablespoon of peanut butter to your shake, it's delicious. I'm with you I think the shakes are disgusting. I've tried supplementing them with fruit, big mistake, lots of bathroom issues. I have added yogurt to them, it helps some but not as good as the peanut butter. I am 5 weeks out from ds surgery as well and I feel for you; I'm struggling to find the one that works for me as well.
Wow. With all the brands out on the market, you can't find one that you like?
I kept trying brands, looking for a way to get samples so I could taste it first. I also bought all chocolate flavors if I was trying it for the first time. I tolerate chocolate much better than other flavors.
Also, there are different kinds of protein shakes on the market. There is Whey, which everyone tells us to get because we absorb it the best. But there is soy, egg, casein, and milk protein shakes. There are concentrates, which are lower quality but if that's what you like than use it.
If I buy something that I don't like, I add greek yogurt to it. I've added peanut butter, sour cream, sugar free jam, raw eggs, egg custard (mixed in a food processor), sugar free pudding flavors, you name - I've tried it to change the taste of some of this stuff. I've bought stuff that I can't stand, but I don't waste it. This stuff gets expensive to keep on buying jugs of it and not use it.
Keep experimenting. Hope I've given you some ideas to keep searching for a brand you like.
I hope things will even back out soon. Taste buds during ketosis are crazy! I ate a lot of shrimp ****tail when I was a new-op and experimented with various shakes. That's when I started playing with protein coffee. The coffee can reduce the sickening sweet taste but you do have to find the magic powder that works for your system. I've settled on 2 brands, Syntrax Nectar and JayRobb. At first I used Lactaid milk but was slowly able to switch to 1/2 & 1/2 + water and now heavy cream + water. Wishing you good luck.

I am 3 months out and simply cannot stand any of the whey proteins. I just stopped trying, but soon realized I had to have some form of supplement. My lean, fit, beautiful friend just happened to mention that she drinks EAS protein shakes every day BECAUSE SHE LIKES THEM. Imagine! They are soy protein, but really do taste good, and I tolerate them really well. Probably not the best source, but I figure it's better than nothing.
Did you try Isopure? I, personally, hated them, too, but it's a clear juice-like alternative to the creamy shakes.
