Wondering if anyone had chemical sensitivities prior to surgery

I suffer from chemical sensitivity and am concerned about having the surgery because of the staples. Just wondering if anyone else suffers from chemical sensitivity and has had the surgery and wondering if the surgery has effected them negatively. Any input is greatly appreciated.

I'm not a doctor, but it's my understanding that the staples are made of titanium, an inert, non-reactive metal. I've never heard of anyone having a reaction to the staples.

Good to hear that...

I have a lot of chemical and food sensitivities. My chemical sensitivities are more in line with bleach, cleaning products, insecticide sprays etc. I have found since having the surgery a lot fo the sensitivities have decreased. As far as staples I had no problems at all.

Sounds like you have similar problems as me. Around 5 years ago I developed a weird allergy to all fragranced products, cleansers, detergents.paint, smoke smells....etc...I'm glad that surgery has helped some.  I was concerned about the titanium staples because believe it or not some folks do have problems with titanium.  Most of my symptoms are gradual so my throat will swell up when I'm exposed to cleansers and air fresheners and by the end of the day I'm wheezing and getting a throat infection from the chemicals. Have you ever seen anyone to treat the sensitivities?  I'm in the process of looking for someone because it' makes it difficult for me to work.  Hard to work in environments that use chemicals.  Thanks so much for your input...

I've read that titanium affects flesh differently to skin, ie it's less problematic internally than on the skin.

my sensitivities show symptoms gradually also- it seems to build up in my system before I have a reaction. I have seen several specialists and done lots of blood work to determine my sensitivities. I live in the state of Washington. Because they are a more liberal state they seem to be open to more holistic type of treatments so we have a lot of different areas in which we can go. I have had a lot of success working with different Drs.I hope you can find someone to help you It makes life a little more difficult when you have to work around your allergies.

Are there any specific treatments that you found helpful?  I could check into them here in NC.

Hi sunshine, I'm in that boat, too. I'm allergic to latex and most adhesives, some drugs and several foods.  I can't wear metal earrings and my scalp gets sensitive to the metal in headphones and some eyeglasses that I try to stick up on my head, duh.  I never thought to tell my surgeon before the surgery and had no problems.  The nurses knew I was laytex sensitive but someone put a pad under the sheet in my hospital bed and I ended up with terrible blisters on my butt.  That really wrecked my recovery!  So be careful because it was one of those pads that have the fabric on the outside and latex in the core.

I will definitely be on guard for the latex.  My concern is that I can't have them come in with cleansers or staff members come in with perfume either. It will just make me sick. I will have to speak to the doc about not using anything with chemicals on it with me as my biggest fear is that I have some reaction during surgery. It's scary..I hope I turn out as wella s you...

Have you ever seen anyone about your sensitivities?
