Feeling Hopeful
on 7/15/13 10:03 am
I had gastric bypass in 2007 and have since gained back all but 20 pounds of my original weight. I can recall going to doctor follow-ups and the doctor expressing his disdain with the lack of my weight loss. Since then, I lost hope because, in my eyes, I tried everything and my last hope was not working.
Fast forward to today, I am feeling that not all hope is lost because I contacted my current health care provider and they told me that they do cover bariatric surgery and that it was up to the doctor to determine which revision surgery is best for me. Although my insurance kicks in in September, I am ahead of the game and will make the first available appointment as soon as I can. I am opting for the DS because, from my research, this should have been the surgery of choice since my BMI was over 50. I guess it was not as researched as the RNY.
I will keep everyone posted concerning my progress and hope that I will be on the DS train by the end of the year.
Great decision...
but read your policy carefully, and don't count on anyone working for your new insurer to determine what is and what is not covered. Read it yourself. Pay particular attention to whether or not revisions are covered, not just bariatric surgery. Hopefully you are covered.
Also, keep in mind that there are only a few surgeons who do a true RNY to DS revision, as it's a very challenging and complex operation. I don't know where you are, but be prepared to travel, depending on your location.
