Flagyl=magic!

Dr Stewart gave me a script for Flagyl when I went to see him about a revision.  He felt that my RNY is more like a DS in the intestinal part, only reversed.  Anyway, he said when DSers come in with the complaints I had, and are following a clean diet, he tries a round of Flagyl.  I took pills 4 times a day for 10 days and I just can't believe the difference.  I have had almost no gas or diarrhea since about the 3rd day of Flagyl.  I took my last pill yesterday and I am terrified the misery will return.  I take the Bariatric Advantage probiotic daily.  Does anyone have any other advice to keep things in the wonderful holding pattern they are in now?

I wish you all the best with keeping things great. I've gone on and off of Flagyl and probiotics for 5 years and only Flagyl works for me. I'm not saying that happens for most people. Most seem to do well with probiotics alone. I stay pretty gluten free and my carbs are minimum, so I guess that's "eating clean" as well. Definitely a your-mileage-may-vary thing.

Gina - Do you think newbies should start probiotics early out or wait until there are issues?

Early...even pre-op.

That's great! I don't have any advice since I've never taken it but I know you were struggling. So glad something is helping! Question - what do you mean "only reversed"?

I actually asked Dr. Stewart what the difference intestine-wise is between an RNY with a shorter common channel and a DS. Obviously the pouch is completely different than the sleeve. But I was just wondering why RNY patients not seeing a decent loss (or gain) couldn't just get their intestines shortened. He said there is a significant difference in length. With an RNY they bypass about 1.5 feet of small intestine, while with the DS it's more like 7-8 feet. Maybe you're somewhere in between...? Just some random thoughts.

Again, it's wonderful to hear you're doing better.

I had an intestinal revision of my original RNY and he shortened my common channel.  Reversed because the bile comes from my bypassed stomach and the other part of my intestine is attached to my pouch.  Then it all mixes in the very short common channel.  Does that make sense?  That's how he explained it to me, maybe not in so many words.

Now that you have taken your anti-biotics, go get some probiotics.  I've heard rave reviews about Primal Defense Ultra and Align.

I bought a product made by the same company that makes Primal Defense called a 5 Day Max Care and it really delivers.  I also take Jarro probiotics in between the 5 Day Max Care.   I've tried other kinds and did not see the results that I get with Garden Of Life products.

My gas is gone.  My diarrhea is gone.  I have one BM in the morning, and that is it.  This stuff makes me feel great.
