I thought the vsg stomach was the same as a DS stomach

When you say the sleeve wasn't enough for you was it because you didn't lose the amount you wanted to lose or you couldn't keep off what you did lose - or both?

My mom has soo many comorbids and she really would like to get her diabetes under control and not have to sleep with a cpap anymore. I personally don't think the sleeve will do that for her. If it does in the beginning but then she regains later on Im afraid she wil be back to square one with her comorbids. I'm quite sure if she gets the DS she won't have to worry about the diabetes anymore.

I soo hope I can persuade her to go to Dr. Smith. They are telling her they can probably do her sleeve Aug. 12 so I don't have much time left.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my post.

I didn't lose enough weight with the sleeve alone and then I started to re-gain once I was more than 6 months out - as you know, you can fit quite a bit into an old sleeve ;-)

I'd just lay out the facts to her and then let her choose.  DSs aren't a walk in the park for everyone and I wouldn't want her blaming you if things weren't plain sailing.  Heck my DS was complication free but sure, I get gas if I eat rubbish - you just don't want her complaining when she's bloated.

Yes, that's what I'm going to do. I'm not going to be pushy or anything like that. Its her decision and I will respect her choice. I just want her to go into whichever one she chooses being very well informed. When she came back from the seminar looking very down and discouraged I was concerned. She wanted to back out of it but I guess the sleeve would be better than not doing anything at this point.

She actually didn't ask me about the DS because she says she won't travel. She ask me which one she should get, the sleeve or RNY. I said the sleeve because it would work more like a normal stomach. The pyloric valve would still be there, etc, etc... But I didn't realize there were all of the restrictions, etc. SO, when i found that out, like you said, Im afraid she will be disappointed with it (and me) especially if the rny may be a better choice. Idk, I just want her to be healthy, happy and successful...

Sounds like a plan.  BTW I've read that at 5 years out the sleeve and RNY show similar amounts of weight lost.  At least with the sleeve she does have somewhere to go for a relatively simple revision.  I was scared to death of dumping and precluding myself from taking NSAIDs given we don't know what the future holds, so IMO sleeve is better than RNY given that info.

Ok that makes me feel better about telling her that if it were me I'd get the sleeve over rny. My thoughts also being that if she is unhappy with the sleeve results she can always go back and have the switch portion done.
Thank you, HuneyPie!

The sleeve is simply a smaller stomach.  The body still absorbs food as it always did, but less of it, so all dietary guidelines of normal dieters apply.  The DS does indeed have that same stomach, but the added benefit of metabolic change and malabsorption, which alters the entire digestive process.  That's why we are a little freer with foods than those with the sleeve.
