Diarrheal Advice

Hello I am a year out and I had my DS revision from sleeve. I waited about 3 years to get the revision as I only lost about 50 pounds with the sleeve and had concerns about side affects of DS. I asked questions about diarrhea and all prior to surgery at the Doctors office. I had my annual and NP had major attitude with me about my issues. I only had a high bmi prior to getting this surgery. No blood pressure, diabetes, apnea etc.  And no family issues either.

Now I have acquired chronic diarrhea and nausea. When I have bms I cannot drink anything. It causes me to have a watery stool. I have wait like an hour or so until the nausea and "churning" passes. So I usally cannot eat anything until after 11 am or 12 noon. I have most bm's in the morning. The NP claimed only 5 patients had my issues. She prescribed this really expensive Creon medication and nausea pill. I took the nausea pill. It did nothing for me. Only made me very sleepy. The Creon is $900 without insurance and $141 with insurance.  Both are very expensive. Anyone taken Creon? Does it truly help with these diarrhea issues? I usually take an anti-diarreahl med to keep it from going and going all day. And it doesn't matter at times what I eat. No carbs I can get dirrhea. I am getting over the  hateful attitude the NP had as if all this is my fault. There isn't another DS doctor in the area, so I maybe stuck with them.

I asked what can I eat? Trying to get suggestions on things to firm me up. I only got advice to keep eating meat, veggies and fruit. To cut out all bread. I only eat toasted wheat bread and wheat/rye crackers. I do well with brown rice. I tried pasta about 6 months ago and did't do well at all. Even the "Dreamers" brand.   I am tired of eating the same foods over and over. Does Vitamin B12 firm people up? Does anyone else have issues with pooping after drinking water.  My labs came back fine. HDL were a little high due to eating all this meat. Again prior to this surgery, I never had any high HDL.   Any advice you have or experiences you have will greatly be appreciated. I understand that every person's body is different.

I am trying to stay mentally positive about the decision I made to get this revision.  This is something I will have to deal with for the rest of my life. I am a person of faith and forgive myself for doing this. I am doing my best to expect good out of this and go on and enjoy my life despite these issues. I am being honest and real.  Sure I wanted to get 100 pounds off, but to have these side effects, I am not sure if the trade off was worth it. This is just my experience.

Thanks God bless you all-

Do you take calcium citrate?  Iron?  Both tend to "firm things up".  Fruit can also contribute to diarrhea.

Good luck, and I hope you feel better soon.

Oh, and, IMHO, the only one you need to forgive is that NP and her nasty attitude.

Thanks for your kindness and tips. I take 600 mg twice a day of calcium nitrate. I take an Iron supplement one week out of the month with my birth control pills. And yes I try to not even think about the NP. And continue to forgive her because she gave me no solutions but Creon. This place is an hour away from where I live and I thought I was doing the right thing by going with them. I really hadn't talked much about it since my visit 3 weeks ago. It makes me angry. My doctor is Dr.Stewart in Denton. I can't see him unless I take the Creon and see how it works. I didn't find out about this practice of not being able to see my doctor until I started having issues. I may go a week without any issues. Then bam it happens. With the exception the the water/poo issue, this is every day. I don't eat much fruit. I wish I could for actual variety. I found some good meat recipes that I will try out this weekend.   I may call around and see if another Dr. office can see me.  I am not getting the aftercare I need with these issues. And NP makes out as if I am the only DS patient with these issues. Really?:)

Thanks again for you advice!

Calcium nitrate or calcium citrate?  Is it plain calcium or does it have magnesium added? Magnesium oxide can and does cause diarrhea.  What about sugar alcohols? Most sugar-free stuff has them and they can cause diarrhea also. What about lactose intolerance, some develop that right away, some after a while.

Be aware that Creon will also stop your weight loss.

Calcium Nitrate Plain. I purchased from the Doctors office. I am aware creon will stop my weight loss. I am at my goal weight. My boobs are those of an 80 year old and my thighs have major excess skin. I was at 268 and now like 165 or less. It has held steady for about 3 weeks and I am actually happy about it.  I do not want to lose anymore weight. I need a major breast reduction and lift and thigh lift. Was told by the NP to wait 6 more months as my body may lose more weight. My OB states I need a boob job as the tissue is gone due to the weight loss. But my job situation changed since I had the surgery. I am making half the money and cannot really afford any plastics right now. Maybe next year as I am looking and interviewing.  I hadn't started the Creon since it is expensive and not sure if it will work or not. I don't do sugar free stuff. And yes, I also developed a lactose intolerance. But I can't stand the taste of soy milk. But force myself to do it:)

And NP makes out as if I am the only DS patient with these issues. Really

My doc is also Dr Stewart and i can  not get rid of Diareah either. Ms Sue .....I havent talk to yet And the staff are not sure what to tell me. All i know is i am totally drained and exhausted and live on the toilet and it is pure water constantly. I take around 8 immodium a day and cholestermine 6 times a day and it bareley helps me ..Ask your gasterologost for some cholestermine .it does help.i'm only 5 weeks out and hoping this goes away and i'm kinda getting scarred it might not go away. One thing for sure....there is no way I can go back to work .

I think Dr Stewart is the  best DR for the DS surgery But does not have people skills or good bedside manners.

I'm praying this will not be a chronic problem for me or I might have to have it reversed and only have the sleeve !

Sorry for all your diarreah. Being new it may be more. I had it really bad when I was first out. I couldn't keep the shakes down. I had to have make mine into thick fruity type of smoothies. And that only stayed a couple of hours. I realized I was lactose intolerant and just couldn't do the shakes.  I am getting to more tolerant of milk. And no problems with cheese. I had yogurt the first time in many months without getting queasy.  I saw my primary and they are doing fecal test on me. I am on an elimination diet and still feel a little funny some mornings. My stomach was "sour" today in the morning. But I didn't have a watery stool. My primary said I may have IBS or some colon issue. I am waiting on the tests to come back. My primary was very helpful and supportive. She wasn't sure why I was given stuff for nausea but nothing to clear up the real problem of  diarreah by Sue. As I don't even have nausea.

You may want to see your primary or specialist about this. I hope and pray you get better soon.

Hello, I have had a problem with loose stool for years and found a couple of solutions that helped me and may assist you.

I take Ferrex 150 iron supplement twice a day, because I was hospitalized from anemia from bleeding out from excessive diarrhea over the years three times.  That has replenished my red count and made my stool more solid.

I recommend Primal Defense Probiotics (NOT ULTRA - that's for those who get constipated) to tighten up stool.

Last, you want to take a fiber supplement.  I take Metamucil Orange Smooth right after I come home from work each night.  That enables me to get any major BMs out of the way before I go to work and significantly lessens the risk of my having to frequently interrupt work for long bathroom breaks.

Right after I eat dinner, I take activated charcoal tablets to eliminate any gas  build-up, but I use that two or three hour window before I take my magnesium and calcium supplements along with any sleeping herbs before I got to bed.  For odor, I take chlorophyll, alfalfal, peppermint and spearmint tablets.

Be sure to drink lots of water to flush out your colon, because you don't want to get constipated or dehydrated.
