An update and a thank you

I saw Dr Stewart in Texas earlier this week.  He didn't feel I was a good candidate for DS due to my BMI being too low, my intestines are already routed very similar to a DS'er and the risk vs benefit just didn't make sense.  He did give me some good advice and hopefully it will help.  When they see DS'ers bothered with the same symptoms I'm having they 1. make sure that all carbs are cut out of the diet.  2.  Address a possible intestinal overgrowth of bad bacteria (using Flagyl). 3. if all else fails, use a pancreatic enzyme (which is expensive).

I guess I am stuck with this dumping pouch.  I will probably have the band put on over it to see if I may end up with some restriction and a slower emptying rate.  I may be be spinning my wheels, but at this point there is nothing else available to me.  I have talked to lots of happy band over bypass patients.  Most of them were just wanting to lose more weight.  Which, even though that isn't my main priority, I certainly would enjoy getting under 200lbs.  The band process will take a long time, my insurance is Cigna and not really known for easy weight loss surgery approvals.  In the mean time, I'm going to drink a couple of premier protein shakes a day (which will give me 60 grams of protein), have a bag of perky jerky for snacking, and have a nice serving of low fat meat at night since fat seems to make me dump almost as badly as carbs.  I'm going to just stay away from veggies, fruits, carbs, sugars and dairy unless I just really want to deal with the gas and runs that will certainly come along if I eat them.  Hopefully all of this will keep my intestinal track happier.

I hope you don't mind if I still stick around here some, I think with my surgery being more similar to the DS in the bypass part, I can still gleam some valuable information, and offer some support to others!  Thanks to all of you for your help.

I hate that you didn't get the news you were hoping for but, I hope the suggestions work for you.  Even just having the answers is progress.

Hi, I would suggest a second opinion. And preferably from a great revision surgeon like Dr. Ara Keshishian. He is about as good as they get. He has a lot more experience with revision then Dr. Stewart.

If you have much problem with dumping and other problems due to the RNY, I would very much talk to him.

Yes, my dumping is horrid, but making better choices does help.I'm not always perfect at that though. I'll take this into consideration. It may be a good idea to change insurance when open season rolls around. My bmi would have to be over 50 for insurance to cover it. There is no way I would self pay again. I did that with my RNY and it wasn't a roaring success.

I would seek a second opinion from Dr Kekeshian or Dr Rabkin or Dr Greenbaum.  Those 3 Dr's are the "gods" of the DS.  If you really want it, then go to Dr K.  Dr Stewart is just a good cutter and is a supposedly good virgin DS Dr.   He is a cutter.   His area is not in revisional surgeries.  I STRONGLY recommend you at least have a phone consult with Dr K.
