DS Pregnancy advice

Hey Friends! I am pregnant! The whole reason I did DS in the first place was to be healthy enough to become pregnant and now I am. It was 3 years ago and I'm still at a healthy weight. I'm very happy. Hooray! Now I need your advice.

What do you look for in a doctor OBGYN?

I take a ton of fiber for constipation, my regular vitamins + folic acid. Are there any other supplements I should be taking?

What about nutrition advice? I'm 10 weeks and drink almost a gallon of water a day (I'm in a hot environment), I eat naturally low-fat proteins and whole grain breads. Yogurt, fruit and veggies. I think I'm pretty balanced with my diet, but is there something one of you would recommend in particular?

Thanks for your advice and help. Hugs! Jena/

Congratulations!!!! Wow!!! That is so awesome! How far along are you?

I'm still preop, so I'm going to leave this to the vets, but I'm excited for you!

aww, thanks! I'm only 10 weeks. I'm super excited for you and your operation. It was hard work...yep, I said hard work, but it's SO worth it! I am so happy for you and your new life! Cheers!

Gosh first thing is what kind of vit are you taking and do you have your labs drawn at regular time periods.  If your labs are in good shape I would make that my primary determining factor of how healthy I was to carry a baby.  Congrats Congrats Congrats.

Now every thing I have read low fat is not an issue as we do not absorb all fat and what we do is good for constipation.  I eat avocados and I would think that would be good for you and the baby.

As for whole grain breads I thought as DS'ers we were to avoid this and that said I do not want to direct or comment on because of the fact you are pg this may be important for you.

I am a light wt who lost wt and then gained 18 pounds back so I am avoiding carbs I do not need.

I not only would leave this up to the vets but perhaps there is a vet out there that went through pg as that would be very helpful.

For sure eat small frequent meals to keep the morning sickness at bay.

I would continue with your water intake as both of you need it.

I am also a nurse however I would never claim to be ob wise other then the basics......... so it will be interesting to read what the vets do have to say.

Good Luck and enjoy special blessing as before you know it they will be grown.  I have one 28 and my surprise child who is now already 12.

Donna, you are wonderful! Thanks for your encouragement and support. My levels look good, I just wondered if people said they increased their protein intake or any other advice :)

Avacados are a great idea!  I had no idea that increasing fat in my diet would help with constipation... I bet I've been eating all the wrong things for the past couple years. Lots of scrambled eggs, beans, fresh fruit and salads and meat.  Ha ha, I was a light weight (270) and assumed that I would absorb more nutrients b/c my common channel is 100 cm long. So I have avoided high fat foods. Good to know!

Bless you nurses who serve your community so diligently. My hats off to you, my Friend. Best, Jena/

Congrats on your pregnancy. I'm also only Pre-Op.. Surgery on the 29th and not being able to get pregnant is a factor in my decision as well so it is great to read that you have gone through this and been successful. Good luck with your pregnancy.

Thanks! Good luck my Friend! I've heard that it's really easy to get preggers after surgery. Not the case for me - I wasn't kind to my body with eating disorders, etc. for several years. So my body was like, "Um, you can't even take care of yourself, I'm not letting you take care of another human inside you!" :) So yeah, it's a miracle. And it will change your life, if you let it (surgery). I'm SO exited for you~

I am post op, and have a 17 month old. My pregnancy went fine, the only issue I had was with potassium. The liquid they give you is disgusting, but I found I kept it up at a good level naturally by drinking a coconu****er (I bought vita coco from Costco). 1 a day kept my potassium up, if I stopped for a week it would plummet! They had me stop taking my vit d (50,000 iu/day). And that dropped and it was hard to get back up. So don't stop the vit d, even if they say to, refuse! Afterwords I needed 6 weeks of iron infusions. But I get infusions once every 6 months anyway since I can't tolerate iron pills. Good luck and congratulations!

Btw, I did gain 20 lbs back, but am still 200 lbs down from where I was. I'm now back on no carb diet and trying to stay away from snacking with my son.
