Food mistakes?

Wondering what foods you ate after surgery that you found out was a huge mistake. Foods that make you sick that you might have thought would be ok or other consequences?

I'm looking to get an idea of what I'd be better off avoiding for good instead of making the mistake myself. I know everyone reacts different but I'd love to learn from everyone's mistakes. I've been taking lots of notes reading all of these posts.

My biggest mistake was ASSUMING that I could have milk after surgery. Turns out I was lactose intolerant. Most of us are early out, many outgrow it...I did not.

early out i was lactose and gluten intolerant.  but, that wasn't the worse.  finding out i could no longer chew sugarless gum, or consume any sugar alcohols was absolutely the worst.  this after i must have chewed 3 or 4 pieces of gum.

i could deal w/the gas and diarrhea from diary, or bread, but the sorbitol, manitol, etc, made me so sick.  the foamies, are so yucky, and it stayed with me for an entire day. it was the worse feeling ever.

4 yrs out and i am still scared to give it a try.  dairy and gluten, well, we've become friends again.

I've heard about the dairy and gluten, but the sugar less gum is new. What happened when you chewed the gum? Were you able to chew any kind of gum?

Had my first Atkins bar late yesterday afternoon.  Threw it up early yesterday evening.  I assumed it was the sugar alcohols.  NOT happy.

Things that bothered me after surgery.  Sugary drinks, Iced tea, Kraft dinner or any pasta, eggs, lettuce or raw veggies.  I still have days where these things bother me, It feels like you ate a brick.  Sits very heavy in the tummy.  Best to avoid these foods anyway.  Focus on Protein and water.  Follow your diet as best you can.  (things that are high in protein that are good early out are Greek yogurt, yogurt, Val's ricotta fluff.  later Snow crab legs (very high in protein) and pumpkin seeds chew them till there is nothing but a paste.  There is recipe for Val's ricotta fluff on the dsfacts web site

Thanks for the description of what it felt like when you ate these things and the Protein advice. I'll need all the different protein ideas I can get.

Sugar alcohols that end in "itol" are no-gos. Celery that hasn't been peeled was painful.

Two things....after two years with DS

ONE- I'm STILL trying to get used to not eating and drinking at the same time.  Sometimes I'll forget and drink water mindlessly... aaaand then everything will come back up.

TWO- Sushi is still hit or miss and I have to eat VERY carefully, CHEW very well and prepare to only be able to eat 3-4 pieces because it's so bulky and fills me up
