I've NEVER heard of anyone having a Lap Band and a DS concurrently (a la Band over Bypass).  Have any of you?

The reason I am asking is The Wise and Powerful Wizard is advocating it in another forum.

I'm interested in hearing if anyone actually has a band over DS and, if so, how's that working for you.

I read somewhere on here that someone had a band put over there VSG tummy.../shrug.

I just read this girls post and then read the link she is referring to. She of course takes the words "Could",  "Some" and "if" and turns them into "Can", "All" and "Are".

In that article they are discussing the possibilities. It has worked for a few. It is a possible solution for a few re-gainers. Failed surgeries percentages are growing due to the fact that WLS is becoming more common. Success percentages will grow as well.  It does not change the fact that the band has the highest failure rate of any WLS.

They are simply discussing the possibility of adding bands to revision procedures as a CHEAP way to help fix the problem. The same complications will apply. They do not mention the DS at all. It is only the VSG and the bypass. I would imagine that the DS would be a better fix than adding a band. However, it is not cheaper. Insurance companies want cheaper.

She blew it way out of proportion.  I tend to ignore people like this. Ignorance is bliss and some people only believe what makes them happy.

I am a veteran bandster. She is a baby bandster. I too was a huge band fan when I first got it. Unfortunately,  I had all the MAJOR complications from it and lucky I did not get cancer. My esophagus is just now healing to the point where I can talk better and sing again now that the band is removed. However, all my back teeth are gone now due to the vomiting. I hated my band. If I had known about the VSG back then I would have done that procedure instead when I was smaller than I am now. I went DS because of my weight and complications. She is still a baby bandster and is singing the praises of her surgery. Give her a few years and she will change her mind.

I also was a bandster.  I had a slip.  It was hell, especially since I needed to change surgeons.

My original surgeon was just too far and not practicing enough hours, he was having health issues.  Very nice guy, generally competent but, with office hours one afternoon a week, not working for me.

The surgeon my gastroenterologist referred me had the most inept office staff, including a patient coordinator who made untrue statements in patient health care files and ended up resigning instead of getting fired.  The surgeon also had the damned testing done NPO, which negates the possibility of seeing the slip.  I got fed up.

The third surgeon (and, hopefully) finally surgeon was Dr. K, who is an outstanding surgeon and good, kind person.  He has a wonderful staff, including an intelligent office manager who understands insurance.  I wouldn't be surprised if I ended up revising from sleeve to DS and, if I do, I will travel the 6,000 miles to go back to him.

Hey hun!

Yes, it is true (at least years ago).  Years back and I am not going to remember his name this surgeon would band his DS patients as part of his regular practice.  Dr. Iz . . . .  I will come back to this post when I get his name right.  I remember this SMO woman on this forum who got extremely thin and contemplated using her band so became really curious about it.  That was maybe 7 years ago but this doc was doing them regularly unless the patient objected to having the band.  I heard recently ppl were being told to object to this suggestion.

On the other 'subject' you refer to, I've truly had it.  It's a true sociopath.

Hope all is well.

Best,

L

Thanks, Leila.

Over the years, I've found that it generally better to stay out of some conversations and I don't generally engage with her.  No matter what you say about about your experiences, it's "band bashing."  Umm, no, it's not band bashing to address band complications.  And a band doesn't have to be too tight to slip.  I don't wish harm to anyone but the purpose of OH is to provide information and support and, to me, that includes complications.

My surgeon will put a mesh or non-adjustable band around a sleeve (VBG with sleeve) or he will put an adjustable one on if that's the patient's choice. If a person isn't successful with the VBG with sleeve and decides to get a DS, he will advise them to keep the band, but again, it's the patient's choice if it was an adjustable band. He hasn't done them concurrently to my knowledge, it's always as a revision or a 2 step DS for someone who starts out very heavy.

Thanks, Gina, I'm glad to hear you verify how and why this is done, particularly since the Wizard was pointing at your surgeon.  Wheat you are saying and what she is saying don't really seem to correlate.  I go with your explanation, since you actually have talked to the surgeon and understand the methodology.

I have only been here for a short time, but notice that chick has too much time on her hands!! She is annoying as hell and needs a new damn hobby. And needs to stay in her oh so happy lane. You would think she gets paid, for the mess as much as she post.

We didn't hear much from her when she had her Happy Banders group.  Not sure if she still has that going on.  All of us bandsters and former bandsters who had experienced complications, whether or not they necessitated band removal, were unwelcome and not permitted in her group.  Which is fine, her prerogative, her group.  We almost never heard from her.

Then she had her own complications, which were not unlike those of us who weren't welcome in her group.  And she's back.

Don't get me wrong, when she's truly a happy camper, she can be quite engaging.  But the reason I don't engage is I question some of the data she puts out there and I have better things to do than enter into the combat of World War N.  I hope that her current band is the end all, be all most awesome thing ever and she NEVER has another complication in her life.
