When did you start driving after your surgery?

Once you're off narcotics for pain.

I drove after a week, which was STUPID because I was dehydrated and nearly passed out. I would get permission from your surgeon first.

I drove on day 8 post-op. It was an emergency so I think there was some adrenalin too. But I was fine. It really depends on if you're taking pain meds. I hadn't had any all day/night before I drove and I am trying to stop those now.

I drove a short distance at 2 weeks.  I had stopped pain meds after about 3 days.  My husband really insisted that I didn't want to end up in the hospital because of some other stupid driver.   He made a good point because I wanted to do everything to let my new insides heal well.

I drove at about 7 days post op. I didn't drive far, though. I haven't been taking anything stronger than tylenol extra strength for pain. I haven't been on the highway yet. Just about 2-2.5 miles from my house. I think one thing to remember when driving is what will you be doing once you get to your destination and for how long. The first time I drove, it was to get some things from the grocery store. I think I was in the store for about 20 minutes and I was exhausted by the time I got through check out. If the store had been any further than it was from my house, I would have been in trouble.

My surgeon advised no sooner than two weeks out.   That's what I stuck with, though I stopped pain meds much earlier.  You'd be surprised how much of your core muscles you use in driving, not just getting in and out of the car.  Your abs need recovery period, even after pain meds have stopped.
