All,

I am fuming right now over comments made by a local newscaster about Obesity.  I am tired of  crap like this, and I urge you to voice your opinions on 11alive.com.

People like her are why it's taken so long for the medical community to label obesity as a disease. If she's going to speak her mind, she really needs to become educated on a topic first. It's clear she has no close friends or family who are obese or she would be sensitive and knowledgeable about it.

Don't let her have the power over you to get you riled up - it's not worth it.  She clearly doesn't know any different.

It's just an issue of someone talking about something they can't understand. I don't necessarily think it's a disease, but I do think it is a serious condition and any available resources should be used to help treat the obese. Obesity is like any other condition. You can go to the doctor and they can tell you what to do, but if you ignore them when you leave, you can't be helped. I'm grateful for surgery because it is certainly helping me. Could I have lost weight w/o weight-loss surgery? Sure I could have but I needed the add'l help. What people like her don't understand is that most obese people have been struggling with this all of their lives and if it were as simple as the doctor saying, "You need to lose weight. Cut calories and exercise" obesity wouldn't be an issue.

But what sounded real dumb was she said, "30 percent of American's are obese. So 30% percent of Americans have this 'disease'"...Like there aren't numerous people with high blood pressure, diabetes,or other diseases at the same time...DUHHHH!! Don't let this upset you. She is real ignorant. She just doesn't know any better.

Typical.  I've read and heard this attitude a lot.  She was actually closer to the truth when she sarcastically suggested obesity should be classified as a mental illness.

Food addiction is a very real and very serious thing.  Depression and anxiety are contributing factors as well.  Not to mention insulin resistance and how your metabolism gets hosed once you become morbidly obese.

There are a myriad of factors that people like her refuse to consider because they've never been really obese.  She can't understand what its like, so she ridicules any idea that isn't "put down the fork".

She just doesn't get it! So much ignorance when it comes to obesity.  If just SAYING NO to drugs didn't work; why would it work with food.  It's not just about discipline and knowledge.  In that case, let's just say NO TO CANCER too while me are at it!

As a reporter she has the responsibility to a listeners to be educated on the subjects she comments on.

This really infuriates me.
