Revision from extended RNY to DS?

I had a RNY 11 or so years ago, I didn't lose as much as I should have so the surgeon bypassed more intestine during my second hernia repair.  Fast forward to present day, I have never been successful compared to most.  I only lost 43% of my weight at most, but I have managed to keep it off.  My issue is now, I have major dumping issues and feel like crud every time I eat.  I also found out a few years after my RNY that I have some kind of autoimmune disease.  Its either Lupus, RA or MS.  I have a very mild course of whatever it is and am in remission most of the time but when it hits...it hits hard.  After I ended up with an ulcer, I went to a surgeon that told me I would NEVER, EVER, EVER be able to have anti inflammatory meds again, and all that is wrong with me is all my own fault.  I wasn't as disturbed about it until I had a flare up.  OMG!  It sucked!  Anyway, I talked to another surgeon who did an upper GI and scope on me, he wants to do a BOB.  After my recent flair, I'm concerned my body will reject the band.  So, I'm looking into the DS.  I really don't care much about the weight loss, but want to know can you have anti inflammatory meds and steroidal meds with the DS when really needed?  I'm so terrified of a big surgery and no one does the DS in Oklahoma.  It seems the DS'ers are the happiest with their surgeries out of all of the others.  What is eating, pooping and gas like?  I have been miserable with my RNY.  I dump on fat and carbs.  I don't enjoy food AT ALL.

I'm sorry you're going through all this. You might want to reach out to "Teachmid", Gail. She posts almost daily on Bites & Vites. She had an RNY to DS revision and lives in OK City. Her DS surgeon was Dr Keshesian (sp) in CA. Check out www.dsfacts.com for DS surgeons and know that only a handful do RNY to DS revisions.

Honestly, once you get past all the surgery/recovery stuff living with the DS is easy.  I know for sure I would never go BOB....why add more misery to what I already had?

I had my DS 9.5 years ago, and I take Aleve AM and PM, EVERY DAY. I can't function without it.

Yep DSers can take NSAIDs and eat and drink at the same time.

A DSer should eat predominantly Atkins style - you can get away with minor indiscretions, but 2 cookies like I had yesterday morning are not to be recommended (I got gas and diarrhea, but that was my own stupid fault).

I poop like a monster (say 5 times the quantity pre-DS) and 20+ minutes on the toilet is normal.  I tend to go 3 or 4 times a day.  I've never had an accident since being switched but that's because I generally don't trust farts - who wants to gamble and lose!! mail

I hear you on the concern about your body rejecting a band.  I switched contact lenses about 18 months ago to the latest Johnson and Johnson and about a year down the line I had real problems with them which turned out to be due to silicone... I guess having my boobies done is out then!!

Thanks for the support ladies! I called Dr Stewarts office (in Texas). They took my info and are going to get in touch with my insurance. In order to have the DS as an original surgery, you must have a bmi of 50. Mine is sitting around 40 at the moment. I hope the proof of my medical conditions will be enough to bend the rules. We shall see!

Dr. Stewart is awesome and will take great care of you! I had a revision to DS from RNY (10 years out) and feel better than I ever have. Good luck!!

I'm a revision and a patient of Dr. S.  You might consider contacting Walter Lindstrom's office.  They were invaluable to me and worth every penny (and more).  Good luck to you.
