I'm 5 weeks out. I've had no issues with my DS except..... I'm ALWAYS hungry (every 2-3 hrs) and the hunger pains are painful. I get my fluids down about 40 ounces and I've been trying to up my protein (I do about 60g) for now. I find I eat a whole lot. Example, I can have 2 egss with bacon and sausage for AM, then tuna for lunch and chicken or anything else for supper. I'm really staying away from carbs (I may have a 1/2 slice of whole wheat bread here and there but nothing dramatic.

Problem: It's been 2 weeks and I'm stalled at the same weight. I can go up 2-4 lbs from one day to the next.

What am I doing wrong?????

Also, I usually like my fish fried such as calamari. Is fried foods ok for us in terms of WL? Bowel issues I can handle.

Thx for your help

A. Stalls are normal.  Stay off the scale.

B. Eat more.  If you are hungry you aren't eating enough.  I grazed all day on protein for the first two years.  I never left home without food.  I would be hungry when I got in the car after eating at a restaurant!!!

C. Relax.  You are doing great.

I'm four weeks out tomorrow and I am stalled for a week now. I'm struggling with being able to eat or drink. I eat about 2 to 3 ounces and sip all day. It takes me all day to drink 16 ounces. I don't know what to eat. I'm feeling kind of blah the last few days. I used to have the 2 hour hunger pains but they have gone away and now nothing. I hope it gets better. I should try bacon or sausage.

Hi--I am just out a little over 2 months now, I had the stall at the same time as you, up 2 down 2 but then I started to eat nuts and I think it was the fat that is in the nuts that jump started everything, not the weight loss I had at the start but it is still coming off so I am happy. Good luck.

Maybe increase your protein and water. I was drinking and getting way more than that at 4 weeks out. Of course YMMV.

I am two weeks out from DS today and I find that I also am hungry every two to three hours!  I eat very small pieces of fatty Gyro lamb meat and that goes down well.  I need fat or else the food does not go down well at this point.  I sip broth as my liquid--agrees with me much better than water.  And, started to take my supplements a couple of days ago.  I feel good but am not losing as quickly as I thought I would.  Still have some swelling though.

I am now lactose intolerant and can not eat many carbs without complete bloating/gas.

It's not really a "stall" until you've gone AT LEAST 4 weeks without losing pounds or inches. But a slow-down at this point is inevitable, and here is why.

Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs of water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when you are not getting in enough food, your body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. And when you use up 2 lbs of glycogen, you also lose 8 lbs of water that was used to store it -- voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs that most people lose in the first week of a diet.

As you stay in caloric deficit, however, your body starts to realize that this is not a short term problem. You start mobilizing fat from your adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But your body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy -- like, to outrun a sabertooth tiger. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. And as it puts back the 2 lbs of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though you might still be LOSING energy content to your body, your weight will not go down or you might even GAIN for a while as you retain water to dissolve the glycogen that is being reformed and stored.

Most DSers I know do eat every 2.5-3 hours. It's your 'new normal', and you NEED to eat that often in order to get in your protein.

Thank you so much for that explanation - it makes a lot of sense.  I only ever knew the science behind this in a vague way.
