Protein?
MY DOCTOR TOLD ME TO GET IN 100 GRAMS A DAY. I GET IN MORE THAN THAT. I AM 8 WEEKS POST OP. I DON'T DRINK SHAKES OR SHOTS TO GET MY PROTEIN IN. I EAT FOOD THAT IS PROTEIN ALL DAY LONG. THAN AT NIGHT I GET TO EAT POTATO OR VEGGIES. AT FIRST I HAD TO DO PROTEIN SHOTS THOUGH BECAUSE I COULDN'T EAT ENOUGH. THE GENERAL RULE OF THUMB IS 30 GRAMS 30 DAYS..60 GRAMS 60 DAYS..90 GRAMS 90 DAYS.
WHAT do you eat everyday that gives you that much protein? I eat every 2 or 3 hours, but still struggle to get enough. And that is with protein shots. Can you give some specifics, please? Thanks in advance.
Ultimately, how much protein YOU will need will depend on your labs. I personally can't stomach protein shakes or bars, and you really have to read the labels closely---there are some "protein bars" out there that are less nutritious than a Snickers bar.
Fiber? Maybe. What you really should be doing right now is getting in the habit of taking vitamins and protein-loading. Eating a low-carb, high-protein diet prior to surgery will help you store protein to be used for healing, and if you have any low vitamin levvels it's much easier to build them up before you start dealing with malabsorption.
Hi Peyton -
I'm 9 weeks out, and I really like "Premier Protein" (chocolate) that I can get at Cost****ase of 18 for around $23). It has 30g of protein. I have been carrying around Zone Protein bars for those in-between meal snacks. I didn't start eating protein bars until recently though because I wasn't given the go-ahead from surgeon/nutritionist to eat fiber. The protein drinks/bars helps vary it up. While I love cheese, egg, greek yogurt - sometimes you just need something different!
Good luck with your surgery!
