Higher chance of getting GERD if you had it severly with the band?

When I had the band I had severe GERD.  Since I had my band removed 6 months ago it is so much better. My surgeon says my esophagus is much less dilated now.  What are your thoughts, will I be at a higher risk for getting GERD again once I get the DS?

When I was researching WLS, this was one of the negatives of the DS verses the RNY.  I read that if you already had GERD, the DS would make it worse.  The RNY would cure it.

I had it before surgery.  After the DS, I don't have it at all.  I don't know what the deal is.  I don't have heartburn any more, I'm not constantly bringing up food/oil any more, etc.  So I do not have GERD any more.

Costco makes a protein shake called Premeire that is OK, it's pre-made so it's quick and easy.  If I drink one of those before bed time, that shake comes back up into my throat all night long.  That's the only time I've had GERD since surgery.

I've never had a Band---but boy! did I have GERD pre-op. I spent most nights sleeping sitting up it was so bad. Since my DS 9.5 years ago, it's completely cured.

When I had the band I had uncontrollable GERD to the point of being severely at risk for cancer. I took just about every prescription and OTC medication and nothing worked. Since I have had the band removed and now have the DS my GERD is COMPLETELY under control with NEXIUM. I tried Nexium before with the band and it did nothing for me. For the first time in 8 years my voice is coming back. I do not clear my throat constantly. My esophagus is way less dilated. I FEEL so much better. Now, I contribute this to JUST having the band out  since the DS really would have nothing to do with curing GERD. My point is that since my band was removed it can be controlled now even with the DS. No problems.

I know it's supposed to be common knowledge that RNY fixes GERD and the DS doesn't.  I can tell you for sure most of what I've read over the years says the DS does help with GERD.  If your GERD is caused by that foreign body constricting your stomach, it just makes sense that removing the problem will make things better.

I never had GERD but I can tell you preop, I probably had heartburn once a month or so.  Postop, I think I've had heartburn once or twice.

I think this is a question best addressed with your potential DS surgeon. I can say, though, that a really tight sleeve, like those now being made with the sleeve as a stand alone, could be a problem. However, with the DS that tight sleeve shouldn't be necessary.

I know that I have the smallest sleeve possible.  I was a very mild acid reflux person prior to my DS.  Now, I overproduce acid.  I take 3 PPI's a day.  I think that my sleeve is probably a bit small for the DS.  The acid is causing me real problems.  So, I would speak with your GI Dr as well as your surgeon.
