I was wondering ...isn't that old school .?Doc says because I am apple shape .. would only do sleeve and later finish with the DS part after I lose 60 pnds. This is not good for me.Said if I had a pear shape it would be ok to do the whole thing. Is this normal ?

Would it be easier if it was not the Laperscopical surgery and just do open surgery instead so everthing could be done at once?

Isn't the open surgery more dangerous ?

I am cornfused !

What surgeon?  It is well known tha doing both at the same time causes a synergistic effect that helps people loose more weight and faster.

I would have never allowed a 2 stage surgery myself.  I wanted that synergy to loose the most weight I could loose.

Some surgeons will recommend a 2 stage if the patient's BMI is higher than they're comfortable with. The surgeon may feel it's safer to do it in 2 stages. What's your starting BMI?  If it's around 50 or less, you may want to research another surgeon. Most DS surgeons do one stage DSs.

It is an approach that more experienced Ds surgeons would consider much too conservative. Most men are apple shaped, and most men having the DS have it in one stage. Any chance you could use a different, more experienced surgeon??

there are few times when a 2 stage ds is medically necessary, apple shaped is not one. surgeons like pomp like to do 2 stage ds, for no good medical reason, regardless of the bs he says,  exposing their patients to 2 anesthesias etc, it is just not right....  look over the ds vetted surgeons, don't let just anyone butcher you.  on the question of opened and lap....most surgeons have abandoned open (unless there is an emergency and they have to open, but that is true about every surgery)  get a vetted surgeon that will perform your ds in one stage and do it lap.....good luck to you

Find a better surgeon. Period. There's no good reason to expose to twice the surgical risks,  just because he or she isn't very experienced.

Get another opinion.

Unless you are seriously loaded with co-morbidities there is no reason for 2 surgeries unless it's the surgeon's own honest assessment of his/her skills.  If if that's how they rate their own ability, why would you ever let them cut you?

I met a man in my docs office who had surgery at over 800lbs.  One surgery, not 2 or 3.  It's not uncommon for real DS docs to operate on people over 600lbs.  And I believe Rabkin even does them LAP.  So does Baltasar in Spain.

People make a big deal over open VS LAP.  My surgery was open and no big deal.  I can tell you for sure anyone heavy enough to have the DS is going to have some fugly leftovers.  Don't even worry about the scar.  More dangerous?  Not really.  And in some ways it's good for the doc to see everything and have complete access.

Check out dsfacts and see the list of surgeons *****ally do the DS.

Gary, advocate for  yoursefl, if your insurance runs out in June, get cobras if you can, until you get your surgery and 6 months post op.....it will be well worth it....don't give up and keep asking questions, and reading
