Vitamin question
Hi All
Still having problems taking my vitamins, how many do you usually take a day, I think 31 is a bit much. I have tried with food without food, the iron says take with OJ but paperwork from the doctor says stay away from OJ (not sure if this just while recovering) and every time I take them I feel like I am going to be sick also can't handle the smell of a few of them. Thanks for any help you can give me it is a great help.
Iron gets absorbed better with vitamin C. That is probably the intent with the OJ but better if you take it with a vitamin C pill instead of OJ. Maybe the OJ would increase the acid in your stomach? Not a good thing early out.
Look for alternatives to the form of vitamins that are giving you trouble. For Iron and C I have chewables that go down OK.
leanonme is right you have some reserves to rely on. Start slow and add things as you think you can handle it.
People deal with vitamins differently from just following Dr's orders to following the vitalady regimen. You might list
your full vit schedule (times and doses). That is usually what the vets need to see to offer some concrete suggestions.
I would also add comments about anything you don't like.
I thought we were past trial and error but were all different so some experimentation may be required.
Good luck getting it sorted. This early out it is still something I get anxious about I just tell myself I have time and that worst case my first set of labs will point me to problem areas. There sure seems to be a lot to learn about vitamins.
I started taking vits at 1 month out, and not many of them at that point. The big thing is get 2-3 multi vits down per day - something like Centrum. Then start adding Calcium right away.
Don't use OJ, it will have sugar in it and make you sick.
I didn't get my act together on the vits till I was 2.5 months out. I don't advocate taking this long, but my labs at 3 months were fine.
And I had a really hard time with iron, so I switched to Heme Iron by Colorado Labs. That stuff is great. I could take 3 or 4 of those a day and feel fine. I had to work my way up to the Vitalady iron (Tender Iron).
I have also struggled a lot with getting my vitamins in. I'm almost 9 weeks out. I've got the Vitalady vites, and I usually spread out a full day dose over 2-3 days. I also chew on some of my daughter's Flinstones when I just can't get the big pills down. I've had a major problem with nausea/vomiting (Dr. Greenbaum says it's a hormonal reaction to the surgery similar to severe morning sickness), so I often throw up pills immediately after taking them. It's getting better slowly, and I'm working on being able to hold pills down one at a time. I haven't had blood work yet, but I'm assuming that my stores will carry me through until I can work my way up to the full protocol.
