calcium question

I know I should not take my iron with any other vitamin, just with vit C.  Never take iron with Calcium.

Can I take Calcium with my multi, my biotin, my other B's, etc?  Or does Calcium bind with all other vits and should be taken on it's own?

Also, I read some where ('somewhere' is a big source of info for me) that I can't absorb more than 600 mg at one time, so no sense in downing 1800 mg at once.  At most, 1200 mg (50% absorbtion?).

Thanks for the into.

they say no more than 600 at a time, I don't know if anyone has any proof for that????  Calcium is suppose to be a bit of a hog with other minerals  for the receptors, I've heard ...

We can make all of this really difficult or we can just take the vites and try not to worry about it too much.  But you are right.  Taking 1800 mg of calcium at once is a waste.  It's a huge mistake to make all this so complicated that people just give up.  It's always better to take the pills than skip them.

Here's how Ca absorbtion works.  Everyone has Calcium Receptors in their small bowel.  Some folks have more than others.  We have a lot less than everyone else.  Each receptor grabs a molecule of calcium and starts absorbing.  After each receptor has some calcium, it doesn't matter how much Ca is still floating around, it's going right out the poop chute because there isn't an available receptor.  It's actually a little more complicated than this, but you get the idea.

HOWEVER, and there is always another variable to consider besides the fact that no two of us are the same, *I* would take that 1800 mg dose if it was at bedtime because I know peristalysis slows down at night and I would absorb more than if I had taken that dose in the daytime.

I think counting on 50% absorbtion of Ca is very optimistic.  To find out for sure there would have to be a study done with strictly regulated Ca intake and analysis of the leftovers(poop).  To the best of my knowledge, this study has not been done.  What would make this study even more interesting would be comparing us with the control group(normies).  I have theorized forever that we must lose receptors as a normal part of the ageing process anyway.  It's also true that a large number of normies out there are deficient.  I think the whole Ca/D thing is a big part of the ageing process and one of the reasons we start to deteriorate as we age.  Eventually studies will be done on all this and we will know more.

The malabsorption percentages everyone uses came from a study by Gagner that was done, I think, in 2007.  He was studying food in/food out in DS patients.  I applaud and thank him for this study!  But he was studying fat, carbs, and protein...not supplements.  And absorbtion of vites and minerals isn't always the same as food.

There's still a lot unstudied and unknown about our absorbtion of minerals and vites.  But big pharma doesn't make money from them and therefore won't do much funding of research.

Thanks for the info.

Should I be taking calcium alone, by itself, 2 hours away from my multi and other vits?  Or can it be combined with the multi and rest of the alphabet?

I take my calcium citrate separate from everything else.  It makes for interesting scheduling, but I get it in. Two hours apart was in my instruction pamphlet, and that's how I schedule.

Body's just not picking it all up for some reason, so I'm being sent  to an endo.  I've had this issue out of the gate, especially with pills.  liquid seems to work a little better, but it's so dang expensive!

All I need is a couple shots and some Ca infusions to get me back to normal, then I can maintain po.

I group mine in batches similar to Vitalady's schedule. Link: http://www.gblcreations.com/Resources/Gina/ProgramDRNY_ERNY_ BPDDS3-2010.pdf

Thanks for the VL link.  I'm relieved.

I'm really bad about breaking up my vits into batches.  I do one for iron, and one for everything else - my bad.  I'm getting better at it.

Here is a GOOD site with reliable information:  http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/infocenter/minerals/calcium/

Keep in mind that the dosage amounts are for 'normies' and some of them we need a lot more, especially fat solubles.  Most reliable sites will tell you that a person does not absorb more than 500mgs of calcium at a time.

Thanks for the web site.  I will search through this it for more info on vits.
