dumping syndrome

I thought the ds didn't give you dumping syndrome. I have had it twice now. Worse experience of my life. I really thought I was going to die. The first time I drank horchata it is sugar, rice water, the second time was with children's Tylenol pure sugar. I would rather die than go through that again.

Everything affects everyone different, but this, I will be taking to heart.  Everyone always discribes it the same, and so horrible.  Usually RNY'ers. It will be interesting to see what the vets say on this one....  I had mine done on Tuesday also.  How long did they leave your CC, and alimentary limb?  just curious...  Mine is CC 100cm  and alimentary limb is 130cm bougie is 38

I have exactly 200lbs to loose, and wanted to get as close to goal as possible, and asked for it that way he really wanted to do a 125.  It sounds perfect for you since you onley have 77 pounds to loose......  An exciting journey ahead for the both of us.....

I  think it was the sugar  that made you sick both times.

I am not a veteran but I have done two years of research on this surgery as well as several nutritional classes for it.  I have also read these forums for a long time.

Dumping syndrome is different than the pain, gas and diarrhea you get from the DS. If you still have a pyloric valve then you did not have dumping syndrome just a reaction to sugar. RNYers do not have a pyloric valve. DSers do. Dumping syndrome is from the sudden rush of sugar into your intestines from your stomach because there is not pyloric valve to stop it (as in the RNY) the symptoms are similar but subtly different.

Dumping Syndrome symptoms....

*A feeling of fullness, even after eating just a small amount

 *Abdominal cramping or pain

*nausea or vomiting

*Severe diarrhea

*Rapid Heartbeat

*Sweating, flushing, or light-headedness

Also, your surgeons staff should have been very clear about the fact that sugar or carbs will cause you to have diarrhea, gas and cramping. You are not suppose to be eating over 9 grams of sugar in any one meal. That is also something that is all over this forum. Utilize this forum as much as you can to help you with your diet.

You are fresh out of surgery and the first thing you drink has sugar and rice in it. Two of the worst things for DSers fresh out of surgery. No wonder you vomited. You have to stick to the DS diet given to you post op or you will have issues. Your body is still changing and healing. Stay away from sugars and carbs as much as you can until further out. Let your body adjust. Were you given a post op diet? If not, maybe a few of us can help you.

Most issues with the DS comes from not following the rules.

I hope you feel better.

When I had the RNY I think I may have dumped twice and it was a very, very unpleasant feeling but it was not painful. Since I have had my Ds I have had several occasions where something was way too sweet for me like the Tylenol and I was extremely nauseated and felt like I was going to vomit. I had cramping and diahrea.. The other day I wasn't paying attention and got a lemonade to drink with some fish I had ordered. It was a long day and I was hot and tired. Because I always put lemon in my water I didn't think too much about what type of sugar they were putting in it. I barely made it to my sons home to use the restroom, then had to stop at McDonalds. I barely made it home and had cramping and more diahrea all night long. I was miserable!

Dumping Syndrome is a reaction to sugar.  You can call it what you want, but when I have too much sugar I get these side affects. Its rare, but it depends on how your body reacts to certain foods or liquids.

Dumping Syndrome symptoms...

*nausea that I want to vomit it backup....I tired and tried, I felt so bad.

*Sweating, flushing, or light-headedness

*Sometimes  even diarrhea

It doesn't, normally.  You might want to get a copy of your surgery report to read about exactly how your DS is configured. Just a precaution...If he gave you a something other than a standard DS, you need to know.
