I think it was the sugar that made you sick both times.
I am not a veteran but I have done two years of research on this surgery as well as several nutritional classes for it. I have also read these forums for a long time.
Dumping syndrome is different than the pain, gas and diarrhea you get from the DS. If you still have a pyloric valve then you did not have dumping syndrome just a reaction to sugar. RNYers do not have a pyloric valve. DSers do. Dumping syndrome is from the sudden rush of sugar into your intestines from your stomach because there is not pyloric valve to stop it (as in the RNY) the symptoms are similar but subtly different.
Dumping Syndrome symptoms....
*A feeling of fullness, even after eating just a small amount
*Abdominal cramping or pain
*nausea or vomiting
*Severe diarrhea
*Rapid Heartbeat
*Sweating, flushing, or light-headedness
Also, your surgeons staff should have been very clear about the fact that sugar or carbs will cause you to have diarrhea, gas and cramping. You are not suppose to be eating over 9 grams of sugar in any one meal. That is also something that is all over this forum. Utilize this forum as much as you can to help you with your diet.
You are fresh out of surgery and the first thing you drink has sugar and rice in it. Two of the worst things for DSers fresh out of surgery. No wonder you vomited. You have to stick to the DS diet given to you post op or you will have issues. Your body is still changing and healing. Stay away from sugars and carbs as much as you can until further out. Let your body adjust. Were you given a post op diet? If not, maybe a few of us can help you.
Most issues with the DS comes from not following the rules.
I hope you feel better.
Dumping Syndrome is a reaction to sugar. You can call it what you want, but when I have too much sugar I get these side affects. Its rare, but it depends on how your body reacts to certain foods or liquids.

*Sweating, flushing, or light-headedness
*Sometimes even diarrhea

It doesn't, normally. You might want to get a copy of your surgery report to read about exactly how your DS is configured. Just a precaution...If he gave you a something other than a standard DS, you need to know.
