Hey everyone! I'm getting super nervous for my surgery. My birthday is tomorrow and surgery the next morning! I have a question about stairs. I know everybody is different but if anybody has experience or advice I would appreciate it. I wonder if I will be able to go up and down my stairs in my home or should I just plan on making a bed on the couch?

I'll be four weeks out on Tuesday, and I still have some sore spots.  Could I have went up the stairs a week after surgery?  Yeah, but it would have been a slow process.  You really will have to wait and see how you are post op.  It kills me when someone on here says, It didnt even feel like they had surgery.   That definatly wasnt me.  I still know I had surgery....lol  Good luck, and take it easy....

You need to be where you will be the most comfortable.  I thought it was much easier to get out of a bed than off the couch.  I was able to do stairs fine and I was open.  I did try to minimize the number of trips I made for the first few days.

I was more comfortable on the couch. I could do stairs but it was a tiring trip. I avoided them at all costs.

When I was discharged from the hospital, it was with no exercise restrictions, so stairs were not an issue.  I was done lap.  I mostly split my time between bed and the couch the first week or so.  And remember, the stairs count as exercise

If your surgery is lap you should be able to take the stairs slow when you come home. However, it took me about 3 weeks before I could comfortably lay on my bed. I slept in a recliner. Good luck and speedy healing.

With my first surgery I slept downstairs for a couple of days, but I think I was just afraid to try the stairs.  This time I walked out of the hospital on post op day 2, and walked up and down my very long flight of stairs at least 3 times a day with no problem.  I was slow, but it was ok.  One thing is for sure, going up those stairs will go a long way toward preventing DVT!  Great for keeping those calf muscles working.

Best Wishes,

I recently had my DS surgery and I was able, and encouraged, to walk up stairs while in the hospital!  It helps to get the gas out of your system.

I would say safety first... If you are taking any pain medication that may make you unsteady, avoid the stairs if possible.  Other than that it is a good way to move if you can!

When I got home from the hospital 2 days after surgery, my first stop was downstairs sofa.  Made it upstairs for bed that night.  Then back downstairs for sofa next morning.  Continued with up and down morning and night.  After a few days, I added extra trips throughout the day to build stamina.  I did move very SLOWLY each time I used them.  On the way up because it was tiring.  On the way down to ensure I didn't trip and fall.
