I was so sure that I would do the gastric sleeve but as I read more and more its seems that ds is the way I need to go. I am becoming so nervous now. I only have 1 more approval letter to go cardo and my pcp. My pcp is on board and ready to go. I could really use some in couragine words and and happy stories.  Please help!!

Try not to get yourself too worked up.  Go to dsfacts.com, read the literature of the studies that have been done on the DS.  There is information about the efficiency, mortality and even data about extra bowel movements.  There is a ton of data out there.  That is what you should look at, numbers don't lie my surgeon tells me.  He even tells me to stay off of the support boards because I will read things that will probably never even happen.  I agree the ds is a better long-term solution that the sleeve.  Make sure you have a vetted surgeon and you will be on your way!

I kept asking myself if this was a wise decision. The last week I was a zombie in lala land because I refused to stress about it. It is what it is. IT is either DO or DIE. Literally. One way or another you will wind up in the hospital so it might as well be with this life saving surgery. Surgery comes...YOu go to sleep and you wake up and say WTF did I DO to myself. YOu suffer for a few days then two weeks goes by and you realize that you CAN DO THIS. The pounds come off and you start to feel better. You realize that this is exactly what you needed to do. Is it easy? Hell no. Is it worth it? Yes, at about four weeks out. LOL.

What is one month of a life saving struggle in the scheme of things. The human body is a miracle. Our spirits are miracles. I was told by a few that going back to work at two weeks would be to rough...I did it. YOU can do what you set your mind to.

My mother and best friend said that they could not believe how calm I was the day of surgery. I never told them that I had already determined in my mind that I was going to die that day. Die a fat person and accept it. I did. This fat person died on that table and this LOSER was born. I do not regret my decision. I know that sounds dramatic but that is exactly how I felt going in. I was at peace.

Ronnie, I peeked at your profile. With your bmi the only operation you should be considering is the DS. The DS has the highest percentage excess weight loss and the best maintainence of that weight loss of any bariatric operation presently available. It has been clearly shown to be the most effective operation for people with a bmi over 50.

The sleeve does work well for some people...at least so far. Shortterm results with the sleeve are similar to RNY. Longterm results are unknown. The people most likely to succeed with the sleeve are those with a lower bmi, younger (though of course none of us stay young) and ability and willingness to exercise.

It is normal to be nervous. Just the decision to have wls is a big decision, then choosing the right operation is yet another big decision. The good news is that this is not an emergency, and you can continue reading and learning more until you are confident about your decision.
