Jam?  Where are you from?  You're talking about what's referred to in the US as jelly, as in peanut butter and jelly, right?

Yes, normally eaten a breakfast on toast.

Jelly, jam and preserves are all made from fruit mixed with sugar and pectin. The difference between them comes in the form that the fruit takes.

  • In jelly, the fruit comes in the form of fruit juice.
  • In jam, the fruit comes in the form of fruit pulp or crushed fruit (and is less stiff than jelly as a result).
  • In preserves, the fruit comes in the form of chunks in a syrup or a jam.

Where I grew up, on a farm in Washington state, all of these were called jam.  But what I had this morning was technically preserves, jam with chunks of fruit in it.

Now that you mention it, the only time I heard 'jelly' was a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and it was never made with jelly.

You're quite an expert on 'preserves' for want of a generic term.  I always thought in the US they used jelly where we use the word jam in the UK.  BTW what you guys call jello is what we call jelly over here. ;-)

I googled it.  The part in italics I cut and paste from the internet.

I knew there were different types, but we always called all of it 'Jam'.  My parents were from Europe - maybe that's why we called all of it Jam.

Yep, we call most stuff jam.  It's cultural I guess - when a German sees an animal with long pointy ears they'll call it a hare, whereas we'll say it's a rabbit - our default assumptions are different, not that either is especially better at differentiating species. ;-)

I didn't skip my iron last night but I took a bit less instead.  I pushed the fat today, but still not great so cut back the iron a little more. Taking bed time strontium has messed with my iron schedule as the liquid stuff is full of sugar and stains your teeth so I used to take iron before bed and brush my teeth immediately after, but now I take it in the middle of the night hence the tablets (I'm not prepared to brush my teeth too).
