weird body odour 4 days post op

Hi everyone, I had my DS this past Monday and everything went well except for a (common) complication. Surgeon told me when he had to sew the duodenm to the small bowel the tissue was a little weak so he had to double sew it. They placed a JP (a drain kinda of) but reassured me that this was not something uncommon. Anyhow, recovery has been fabulous except that today I noticed a weird smell in my breath and vaginal odour (sorry disgusting) when I pee. Also, I just went to pee and I was shocked to see it such a deep yellow. My fluid intake is going really good and I always drank lots of water even in past and my pee was always clear. Anyway I just found the breath and pee thing weird.

Also, I noticed sharp right shoulder pain when I try to lie down in bed. I have no fever, vomiting or nothing else. I'm on full liquids right now and it's going relatively well.

Any thoughts???

I believe what you describe for the most part could be normal.

The shoulder pain I had, and was told ahead of time I would likely have. It goes away in a couple weeks and if I remember right was related to the anesthesia.

The dark urine is also normal. I still have dark urine when I get up in the am.

I didn't have the JP, but have heard of others who have it.

The body odors too are fairly normal I believe/ The difference in your breath is likely ketosis.

When I am in ketosis, I have bad breathe.  It's common.

My urine is strong and dark also from the fat cells being passed through.

The vaginal smell is most likely a vaginal infection of some sort.  You can get a yeast infection from all the antibiotics they give you at the hospital/during surgery.  Try OTC cure for that, and start taking a probiotic.

I don't know about the shoulder pain.  I never could lie down in a bed till 6-8 weeks out from the surgery.  I had to sleep sitting in a chair.  So I do not remember any pain in the shoulder.  It hurt all over to try to lie down.

I hope your recovery is speedy and goes smoothly.

I had a lot of pain in the chest area and was told that when they do surgery they pump you full of air so they can see everything better and it will take a couple of weeks to pass thru the body. While I was in the hospital they would give me heat packs to help with the pain and I continued to put heat on my shoulders and chest after coming home. I had the JP drain also. I think everything you mentioned is pretty normal. I noticed my senses were intensified x10 after surgery- especially smell and taste.

Hang in there!

The body odor, breath and dark urine is from ketosis. It is possible that if you do not have a yeast infection that your vaginal odor is also caused from the ketosis urine which stinks...unless you use a baby wipe every time you pee you are going to get some sort of residual odor. I noticed a funk smell as well by the end of the night until I bathe then it goes away until later that day after I urinate a few times. I started using baby wipes after that.

Google Ketosis and you will find that many people complain of all these odors. =)

It means you are burning fat though so YAY!!!

I agree with the ketosis. I had it too but it subsides once you start eating. I had a grimy texture in my mouth also.....it was disgusting but now it is gone...thank God. Just keep getting in your fluids. Your system is cleaning itself out and your body's pH has changed dramamtically.

I'm 10 days out and yes my breath tasted like my body smelled! Yuck!! I also had a jp drain. I had a catheter the 1st 24 hours after surgery and once it was removed I began to have spasms in my lady" parts" and they were bad! They checked to make sure it was not a UTI and it was not. Long story short when I got the jp drain out on Thursday the spasms stopped. Just shared so you would know sometimes wacky stuff goes on behind that dang drain! :)

has the incision area where your drain was still leak a little? I'm home now and from time to time it leaks if I'm not careful.

If it continues after another day, tell a doctor. I am glad you are otherwise doing well.  -Michelle
