Toxicity and vitamins
I'm rather new to the DS world and trying to gather information. I understand the need for massive amounts of vitamins to combat malabsortion issues. I know the DS patient only absorbs about 30% of fat, 100% of carbs and sugars, but how much of the body absorbs vitamins? I wonder how the large doses of vitamins affect your other organs, kidneys and liver. Does anyone know if anyone has had toxicity problems because of vitamins?
Also, is it okay to grind up your vitamins and eat them in yogurt or applesauce?
Thanks!
I haven't heard of any DSr suffering from any vitamin toxicity. I've seen reactions to some vitamin or other but we check our labs so often, most of us stay on top of them, if them doc orders all he/she should. I see folks going a little over the top of the ranges but that isn't the same thing as toxicity.
You can buy capsules and dump the powder in your yogurt, pudding or protein shake. I wouldn't do it with the multi or the vitamin Bs, they taste awful and smell bad too.

The absorption breakdown , as taught in my pre-op classes, are:
50-60% Protein
50-60% complex carbs (fruits and vegetables)
20-30% dietary fats
100% simple carbs (white flour bread products, white flour pastas)
100% simple sugars ( white sugar, brown sugar (which is white sugar with molasses added) syrups - except molasses, it is counted as a complex carb - candy that is not made with artificial sweetener.
I have been told because of malabsorption, it is nearly impossible for a DSer to experience vitamin toxicity, but very common to experience vitamin deficiency, because of the malabsorption created by the surgery. The levels we have to take could send a normie into vitamin toxicity, but not us!
Getting enough calcium was my bugaboo, and I took to quartering the hard pills in a pill cutter, until I found calcium citrate capsules.
I recently was told to stop my vitamin D by my Doctor because I was in the toxic range. I'd been working to bring my vitamin D levels up and ended up getting them too high! It is possible!
I was over 150 on my vitamin D, I was taking 100kIU/daily to bring it up (took a year) and I stopped all supplements for a month to bringt me out of the danger zone. In that 30 days off my Vitamin D, it dropped 50 points. I'm now back to 50kIU/daily for the time being. I believe that'll keep me where I want to be.
I don't think we'll exhibit the same symptoms but it's best to not chance things at the same time.

Perhaps I'll try the 100K daily...I was only doing 50K daily, just got my 6 month labs back, and my D is still in the toilet!
I'm going to have to get my labs redone anyway, because the stupid lab didn't run everything that was ordered!
I'm going to have my surgeon write " test exactly as ordered" on my lab orders from now on, because I know for a fact she didin't leave these out!
Perhaps I'm just being impatient, since you said at 100K it took a whole year for your D to come up.
