Surgery was Friday.......a little dissappointed
Big hugs going out to you. That would be frustrating, getting yourself prepared for one surgery and waking up to a different one. I hope you join the VSG forum. Maybe stay in both the DS and the VSG groups for awhile.
You can succeed or fail with any one of the surgeries. It really is up to you. Each surgery is a tool.
Sip on water if you can. Rest. Walk if you can. Learn how to make the most of the Sleeve until you figure out if you want to go back in for the DS.
Getting a different surgery is NOT a failure. It's just a hiccup on your way to a healthier lifestyle. Remember, you do have a WLS now. You are on the loser's bench. That's a good thing, no matter what.
During my pre-op they made sure to tell me the story of my Doctor doing just that with another patient so you are not alone. Use the tool that you now have the best you can. Good luck.
I read once that if you breathe in the smell from an alcohol pad, the ones they use to rub your skin for blood work, may help ease the nausea. Just something to try if it doesn't settle soon.
I hope your better soon.
Wow, that's interesting. No idea how that would relate, but your surgeon is well-known and respected. Perhaps your stomach lining being so thick means it's even less likely to stretch, so a sleeve might serve you well long-term? Most sleeves do stretch over time, even though the fundus is removed...so perhaps with your lining being so tight, he didn't foresee enough stretching and worried about long-term food intake along with the malabsorption?
If you had insurance approval for a DS, is there a way for that approval to hold for the second part? I would want to try and ensure that if I was you.
Lap-Band June 14, 2001. Dr. Rumbaut, Monterrey, Mexico.
Lap-Band removed after 7 years and converted to Sleeve Gastrectomy on July 7, 2008 by Dr. Roslin. I've had three happy healthy Lap-Band babies.... and one VSG baby. 5 years out from revision to VSG. Gained 55 pounds in past 5 months, now considering DS. :(
That must be a real blow but you can always go the 2 step route if the sleeve isn't enough. Try and stay calm and concentrate on healing.

I my DS
Sorry to hear this, but you got the next best thing! I know a few people with the sleeve that are doing very well! It's much better for a surgeon to not do the full DS if he doesn't feel confident, than for him to try it anyway and mess things up. That could be deadly. I actually switched surgeons because the first one I was scheduled to have my DS with wasn't confident enough for me that he could do it all in one procedure.
You're alive and you have a great tool so Congrats! I can't wait to see your updates. I hope you get your nausea under control very soon.
