Insurance issues

I'm sure this has been covered a million different ways, but the search function isn't working very well right now.

I have UMR primary insurance, which won't even touch bariatric surgery.  Luckily (I thought), I also have Medicare Part A & B due to disability.  Found out today their cap on the DS is...$2,000 or thereabout.  So right now it's looking like I'd be damned near self pay.

Have any of you found yourselves in this situation?  Is self pay feasible?  I just started working with Dr. Dennis Smith in GA; anyone know how much they're willing to work with payment?  I really don't see a challenge that would dissuade me from this choice but I also don't want to be deeply in debt for the next 15 years.

Hi

I am in idaho and also disabled with part a and b through regence and they are paying everything except 200.00 for my surgery. My drs office here has done all the calling for insurance coverage and so fourth, will your drs office help you with that? A lot of insurance companies will deny you at first, but if it is medically necessary due to co morbidities and your dr states that way, they will more likely approve, because face it the insurance will pay far more in the long run for hospital visits, medication, ect over time then a one time (hopefully) surgery that will hopefully resolve most issues. With my Medicare I can change my insurance any time I want, but depending on you situation sometimes you can only change through open enrollment in September ? My suggestion would be to call around to diff insurance and see who does cover it. It may be worth waiting to open enrollment to have your surgery. There are a lot of logistics involved, I don't know if starting one part of it now like blood tests, ect would preclude you if you change later. Anyway hope this helped. I know waiting sucks but if it saves some money it might be worth it.

Good luck

Thanks.  I'm going to work with the Dr.'s office on this but just hearing your story gives me hope.  Good point about open enrollment, too.
