Ok that was a long subject...sorry. I'm looking for opinions on folks getting a DS whether its a revision or first time surgery. Id like to know how you feel about your surgeon...and which one it was..How was your stay at the hospital itself and how is your post care going. I know there will be goods and bads and I know its all your personal opinion...I have no problem if you'd rather send a private message to me then post it. I'm not looking to burn anyone nor advertise anything. I'm looking at this facility and lets be clear it Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington PA... on Old York rd. and I want to do things right...even suggestions are great...like don't forget your toe nail clippers they don't have any...well you get the idea. Thanks in advance.

I have no personal experience with this hospital so can't comment on that, but will say that there are very few surgeons who do RNY to DS revisions and to my knowledge, the surgeons who operate at that hospital who do the DS don't do that kind of revision.

Your best bet for finding DS surgeons is at dsfacts.com.

hi there - almost 4 years ago dr. bonanni gifted me with my very own ds.  he also did another non bariatric procedure on me 2 years later.  he is a gifted surgeon.  i have nothing to complain about with the hospital stay.  i went in on a thursday and was home saturday morning,  or at least it was supposed to be saturday morning, but hubs lost the car keys.....long story.  lol.  you do what the hospital staff tells you to do, walk, sip, rest, walk, sip, rest and every thing will be good.

although i may not agree with a lot the opinions abington bariatric center teaches (ie, low fat eating, etc), everyone i have met is professional, polite and very nice.

if you have specific questions or concerns, you can pm me.  the dsers at abington meet at chili's after the support group meeting.  they are a wonderful bunch of people who will help you with any concerns or questions.

I had a virgin DS at Abington Hospital in 2008.  Dr Bonnani did the DS as well as a hernia repair 2 years later from another unrelated surgery I had pre-DS.  He is very direct but very caring. I continue to go to their office on an annual basis and have been treated well each time.  They are always there to answer questions and address concerns.

As far as the hospital itself  I have been in there many times, having 3 unrelated surgeries pre-DS, and then the hernia repair and some plastics after DS.  The hospital staff seemed very efficient and attentive in the bariatric area. I believe that they receive special training to deal with this area. The training must have worked because I was in Abington in a different wing for a different surgery 2 years before my DS and experienced some issues with getting the proper attention from the nursing staff.

For my DS I was in longer than most because I also ended up in ICU for a few days due to a known cardio issue I have that only rears its ugly head during surgery.  I have to say that Bonnani's office was very efficient and took care of coordinating everything with my cardiologist for both surgeries and it was seamless which was not the case with some of my other pre-DS surgical procedures.

Dr. Bonanni did my DS on 2/6/13 at Abington. I find Dr. Bonanni and the whole staff at his office very caring and helpful. And my experience at Abington was, with one exception, fantastic. I had the surgery on a Weds and left the hospital on Thurs. As stated above, I just did what the staff asked, and everything went very well. My one bad experience was with a nurse...my IV started to infiltrate my hand, and the first time I mentioned that my hand was swelling up, she didn't check it, kind of just poo-poo'd me, "oh, that's normal." A couple hours later, when it was about the size of a softball, I said something again, and then she saw fit to actually take a look. It took several weeks for the swelling to go down...so I suggest you insist that they take an actual look if you think there's an issue. But, other than that, they were wonderful!!

I just had my DS done with Dr Bonanni on Wednesday, yep 2 days ago, I was able to come home yesterday afternoon. Dr Bonanni is wonderful, he is as someone stated very direct (I happen to like this) and still very caring. I saw him 5 times during a two day say, I don't know if that's normal but it made me feel very cared for. I found the hospital stay and staff was great, it was my first time staying in a hospital over night and it was a little difficult just because you can't get good rest they are in and out every hour. At the end of the day that's why I was there, to be taken care of and they did that wonderfully. In the beginning they made sure I knew when to move and walk and sip, and then made sure I knew I could ask for help with walks around anytime I felt up to it, I tried for every hour while awake.

I felt very comfortable when given all of my discharge info, most of it is in the manual they give you at the beginning of the process but it was nice to get lots of one on one reminders and not have to look for the info I needed. I hope this helps! If you have any more specific questions or want updates as time goes by let me know, I'm by all means a Baby DS at this point.
