Some people after DS have trouble with one Artificial sweetener or another. Some can't do aspartame, others can't do splenda.
You will just have to try it and find out. My daughter cannot do aspartame, but she can use splenda. The have some flavors of Crystal light that are splenda sweetened at Bed, Bath and Beyond, as part of their Sodastream flavors. You don't have to use sodastream with the Crystal light, just mix the syrup and water.
I don't drink coffee, either, and I lived on diet Pepsi, diet coke and diet ginger ale! before surgery That is one of the things I am still "mourning" 3 weeks out from my DS. (BTW, my DS surgical team/program was ADAMANT about no carbonated beverages. Ever.)
However, I began weaning myself off of DP and DC several months out from surgery, and the transition hasn't been as bad as I thought it would be. I like Crystal Light, but I am favoring these days Diet Snapple. I also like diet Hawaiian Punch drinks - which, like Crystal Light, also comes in the single packets you can add to 16-20oz water bottles.
I am relatively new to this journey, so I haven't come to the conclusion that artificial sweeteners are hindering any progress or are contributing to the GI issues any WLS patient is bound to experience in the beginning. I do try to temper the intake of artificial sweeteners though by drinking 20 oz of water for every 20 oz of Crystal light/Diet Snapple. While artificial sweeteners are useful tools, I do want to eventually wean off of them. "Frankenfood" kinda freaks me out in general. :-)
Good luck!
While I appreciate that not everyone feels this way, my surgeon's program was adamant about a lot of things that I've completely ignored because my research didn't back them up. I drink 20 oz. of Diet Coke every day and started drinking it again at about 3 months out. I'm 3 years out and I lost approximately 170 pounds. I've been at a stable weight for about 1 1/2 years. I respect if your decision is to follow your doctor's plan no matter what, but I just wanted others to know that doctor's plans aren't always the only way to do things.
(OH, and I drink Crystal Light every day too :))
