I had my DS with Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy last Wed., and whoo it's been tougher than I thought.  I guess I am 6 days out now! I was released on Saturday to the care of my husband and lovely mom here in SFO.

The nausea, fatigue and pain have been more than I thought (I don't know why I thought otherwise, ha!)  Trying to get enough fluids per day let alone eat is a struggle, I find myself not eating a lot.  Is this normal?

Anyway, these forums have been great so far, thanks for that!

I don't think I had anything but liquids until week 3. Staying hydrated, walking, and resting are the important things when you're that early out. Your insides have a lot of healing to do.

Posting to the forums sounds like a triumph to me. Hope you feel a little bit better each day.

Tomorrow is my 4th week since surgery. I am still trying to figure it all out. There are small victories each day as I find I get a little stronger, I can eat a little more and I can drink a little more. I still struggle trying to get what I need in but its coming and I know I will eventually get there. I saw the Dr last week and he seemed to think everything was pretty much where it should be .

I've misjudged several foods and not made it to the bathroom, I've had terrible gas from things I've eaten and I've thrown things back up that my new little stomach didn't like but I'm losing, my energy level is improving, and I'm working hard to get my vites in. I guess what I'm trying to say is that each day is a challenge, its learning by trial and error but its working and each day is getting a little easier.

Hang in there and the pain will pass, the nausea will get better and you will do great. Just take care of yourself, baby yourself and do what the Drs have asked of you.Wishing you a speedy recovery and success!

Hi Sharon

I am struggling trying to get my food and water in but each day is getting easier I hope.  I still have quite a bit of pain at night but it is getting better.

I still have only pooped twice in the past 3 weeks, so I am using Miralax to help.

WOW Lee, I can't believe you've only had 2 BMs. That has got to be miserable. I have at least one a day and sometimes they are a surprise- the kind where you have to shuffle your way there because it hits you so fast. Are you consuming any fat in your diet? I love butter so that keeps my bowels nice and lose. I probably shouldn't be using it BUT I haven't  been constipated yet. I still have some pain at night too. I finally started sleeping in my own bed tho.

I wish I could get more water in- just not enough room to do food AND water .

How much weight have you lost? I am down 19lbs but haven't lost anything for about a week now. I guess my body is just trying to figure it out!. So glad your getting better.

Sharon it is so funny because I thought I was going to live in the bathroom but that is so not the case.  I drink bebefiber, take stool softners, and Miralax daily and my bowels are like glue.  lol.

I have lost 15 pounds so far and I am happy with that, especially considering I am literally full of crap.  Last night was my first night without pain for the entire night.

No I have not been eating butter or fat, my diet is broth, applesauce, egg drop soup, popsicles and stuff like that.  I am doing pretty good with my water but GOD I hate protein drinks, all of them and I believe I have tried close to all of them.

Thanks so much for all of the wonderful replies!  It's good to know I am not unique in my situation; I see a lot of people talking about normal nutrition (much farther out of course) and haven't seen a ton about right out of the gate.  I probably just missed it.  Thanks so much for relating your stories, they sound very similar to mine, and are comforting.

Right now I, too, and just trying to keep enough fluids in me, and am still figuring out when and how much to eat.  I'm making a concerted effort as of today to switch to heavy protein foods (small amounts of shake, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc) to get myself really on track ... with as much as I can eat of course ... not much, ha!

Lamby, John Rabkin did my surgery too on March 28th.  Were you at St. Mary's?
