Can you rice and beans? We eat a lot of rice and beans so I'm curious.

It depends on how far out after surgery you are. Rice swells in your stomach and hurts. I was told I wouldn't be able to eat rice, bread, or pasta  for close to a year out. We eat a lot of rice at our house too, and I normally eat everything else but it, if I am making a dish that includes that. Beans, you can eat those as much as you want. They are a good source of protein and seem to go down smoothly early in the process. I ate chilly a month and a half post op and did fine with it. It wasn't very much, but it tasted so good and helped me get the protein I needed. Good luck!

Can I?  Yes.  Do I?  Not often.  Especially not rice.  Its nothing but carbs, and just a filler.  If I have rice, its *maybe* 2 tbsp after I finish my protein, and I drown it in butter or cover it with cheese or something like that.   I will eat beans, and sometimes use them in addition to meat in a meal, because they are a good source of protein and fiber as well.  I see them as a midway carb, since they DO have nutritive value for me, and they are a complex carb.

Some beans make me horribly gassy, and rice has made me miserable, so I eat just a few bites and walk away.  You don't want to touch either of them, though until after you've finished your protein (and don't try counting beans as protein source- you don't have enough room in your stomach to eat enough of them to count)
