kidney stones

I'm out of surgery about 3 months now.  Down 90 lbs!  Woohoo.  On the other hand, been extremely queasy since my surgery.  About 2 weeks ago, I FINALLY stopped feeling queasy ALL of the time to just SOME of the time.  Was so excited.  Then, BAM.  This morning I woke up with abdominal pain and within 2 hours, I felt like I was in labor (not pregnant, here).  I drove myself to the emergency room (hubby out of town), and after tests and CT scan, found out that I am low in potassium, completely dehydrated, white blood count off and now I have a kidney stone.  For the love!!!  So, I got liquid potassium, 3 bags of fluids and lots of morphine for my stone pain.  They sent me home with a bunch of prescriptions and a new queasiness from the morphine (I didn't care, it took away the pain)...and hubby made it home, so he came to the hospital to drive me home.

Just wondering, how many of you out there have had kidney stones since their surgery.  Apparently, the ER doc called my DS doc and DS doc explained that we are more susceptible to stones since we can't take in tons of water.  Just wondering if I have someone to commiserate with!

Oh, so sorry about the kidney stone!  I've heard they are *awful* and comparable to labor.  :(   Did they say when it might pass?

I can sympathize with you.  I had a 1.6 cm stone that was too big to pass.  It was an oxalate stone.  I now take calcium 4 times a day, no vitamin C, and the diet is very strict.  Of course I don't stick to it like i should so I had a KUB two weeks ago fdue to right flank pain and now have 6 "smaller" stones.  I on the other had did not get pain medication since I am an RN and drove myself to ER and was not screaming in pain they thought I was drug seeking.  After CT scan that showed the stone was stuck in my ureter they finally gave me some Tramadol.  REALLY!!!  Long story but I feel your pain.

I also drove myself to the ER since my husband was out of town.  But I was writhing in the waiting room chair.  Mine was stuck in my ureter also.  They were really nice, though, and gave me 3 doses of morphine.  Massive pain until that last dose....ahhhhh, relief.

We "can't take in lots of water"?  What does that mean?  By three months out you should be able to drink a gallon a day.  I know I could.

I think we do have more kidney stones but I don't think it is from not enough water.  I will be interested to see other replys.

Sorry you are in such pain.  Hope you feel better soon!

I went to the urologist today and he said it was from not enough water intake.  I am very dehydrated.  I'm glad that you can take in so much water, but I'm still very sick every day and just trying to keep anything down.  Very queasy all of the time.  So, I can only take in around 30-40 oz of water a day.

I did pass the stone this morning.  Largely due to all of the fluids they gave me via IV yesterday in the ER.

I know of several DSer's who have had problems with kidney stones, but I haven't.  I have a cup with fluids in my hand all the time, so that may be why I haven't had them.

I use lemonade flavored Kool-Aid fortified with lemon juice and lemon slices(makes it taste more "real")  as my primary fluid.  I can't stand plain water unless it is very cold, almost frozen to a slush.
