Double scoop of protein powder?
I have been using double scoops of protein powders in my shakes. I've read a couple of places that our bodies can't absorb more than 30 grms of protein at a time. That is one scoop worth of powder. So the second scoop is just wasted.
I quit doing double scoops and I feel it. I used to drink my shake by 7:30am, and I would be good till lunch time. Now, with one scoop, I'm starving by 10:30am and need protein. And I'm really hungry for lunch again at noon.
What is your opinion on the double scoop question?
I think you should go by how you and your body feel. If you sip on a double scoop shake for awhile it's probably just fine. I think if you were to chug a double scoop shake really quick, you might not be getting your bang for the buck.

I've heard we can only absorb 20 or 30 at a time (depending on who says it) but I've never seen proof or information on it. My NUT says if my body needs it, it's going to absorb it, he doesn't buy the 20 or 30gm limit that I've heard from patients that go to other providers.
My question would be . . . if I absorb only 20% of what I eat and I can only absorb 20gm, then anything under 100gms of protein would be OK, because you wouldn't max out the 20gms we allegedly can absorb anyway, right? I'd say if that's true, doing a double scoop would be fine and not wasteful, and would explain why you could feel the difference when you stopped.

I never looked at it this way. Thanks for this perspective. If one scoop absorbtion equals 15 grams, than 2 scoops will equal the 30 grams absorbed (out of 60 grams available).
Clarity occurred.
The 20% is fat...no one knows for sure how much protein/carbs we actually absorb.
It has been suggested that protein is about 40%, complex carbs about 40% and simple carbs at 100% (esp sugar). http://www.dsfacts.com/ds-math.html
Note that in this DS math explanation, while the 80% fat malabsorption had been documented by a study by Gagner et al. [68], the 40% malabsorption figure I use for both complex carbohydrates and protein malabsorption are only estimates, and are probably quite a bit more variable person-to-person than the fat malabsorption, because there is SOME digestion and absorption of protein and complex carbs in the small intestine as the result of acid digestion by the stomach and enzymes secreted in the mouth and the jejunum and ilium, together with the much more variable length of the alimentary tract between patients, whereas fat digestion and absorption essentially only occurs in the common channel. The 40% figure comes from conservatively averaging a number of figures -- guesstimates, really -- that I have read and heard from surgeons over the years.
Duodenal Switch (Lap) 01-24-11 | Surgeon: Stephen Boyce | High weight: 250 in 2002 | Surgery weight: 203 | Lowest weight: 121 | Current weight: 135 | Goal weight: 135
Sorry, you are right, 40% :-) but still, the math is the same I would think. If I were to eat 60gms of protein (double scoop shake) I would absorb about 24gms, which is still in the range of what some people say you can absorb in one sitting, at least that's the way I've been doing it. My aunt looked at me crazy post surgery when I was using those nasty bullets to get in protein, telling me anything over 20gms was a waste, butI figured that I was getting 16 to 17gms per bullet. Of course, now that I can eat solids I try to hit about 40gms per meal and get the rest in through snacks, shakes, and bars, but the labs and my energy seem to agree with me, not my aunt.
