Ever wish for the RNY instead of DS?
Hi All,
I am new here. I am currently waiting insurance approval. I am 95% sure that I will do the DS but am a bit nervous about possible complications. Many sites state that DS has a higher complication rate than RNY. Overall, the DS seems like a better fit for me though.
So my question is: Now that you have had the DS do you regret not getting the RNY instead? Why or why not?
Thank you!
I've never heard of a person who wished they had gotten the RnY who had the DS. I've met a LOT of RnY folks who either had, or were trying to revise to the DS.
Complications are the same when you compare apples to apples. Early on the DS was only done on heavier and sicker people so the stats were skewed. Of course heavier/sicker people are going to have more complications.
My surgeon told us that there were no differences in complication rates.
I would have not gotten any surgery (and in fact didn't get any surgery) unless I could preserve my pyloric valve. I had never heard of the DS until I was 50 years old and it actually really ****** me off. I could have had the DS 30 years earlier and had a much happier healthier life.

I am happy with my decision for the DS. Do not regret it one bit. I chose the DS over RNY because I did not want dumping episodes, and I wanted this weight to stay off forever and with the DS and my commitment it will stay off. The one regret I do have though is I wish I would have gotten the DS 6 years ago when I got banded. Thank God I got this revision;)
No regrets at all!!!
No chance of strictures with the DS.
Pyloric valve with the DS vs. "artificial doorway" with the RNY.
RNYers can experience dumping; DSers very rarely do, due to their intact pyloric valves.
Sleeved stomach can be scoped with DS. RNY creates a "blind" stomach that cannot be scoped.
Can drink with meals with DS but not with RNY.
Can take NSAIDS with DS but not with RNY.
Understand why DSers and VSGers love their pyloric valves?

DS (lap) with Dr. Clifford Deveney. Cholecystectomy (lap) with Dr. Clifford Deveney 19 months post-op.
Has not weighed myself since 1/2010. Letting my clothes gauge my progress instead.
Beemerbeeper is right....the high complication rate was in the past when DS was primarily used for those who were super morbidly obese with their lives on the line who already had co-morbidities etc. It still is used for that but the qualifications have changed with many insurance companies. A lot of people are being revised and getting the DS with lower BMIs now.
I am scheduled for surgery on April 17.
I chose the DS...
1. to keep my pyloric valve
2. it is reversible in dire situations
3. no dumping syndrome
4. higher success than the RNY long term
5. is the final surgery people usually revise too when other surgeries failed.
6. I can eat more normally than with other surgeries.
7. I like fatty foods
8. I love cheese and protein
I only want to do this ONE MORE TIME. I failed with the band...this one will not fail me.
I am a newbie to the DS. I had RNY then had a revision 7 years later. Even tho its only been 12 days I can tell a huge difference in my anatomy. I like it so much better this way. I only wish I had had the opportunity to have the DS to start with. It makes so much more sense to have everything in the stomach where its supposed to be.
