Hello to all,

I am 23 days post op with a VSG to DS conversion done in Mx with Dr. Ponce de Leon on March 5. I have had my sleeve for 3 years and felt very comfortable with him doing the conversion. My experience was great and I am having no problems.

I did not reach goal with my VSG in spite of being on program and doing everything I could to lose. I developed a life threatening hiatal hernia that was allowing 2/3 of my sleeve to lay over my lungs every time I laid down. The surgeons in Nashville couldn't think outside the ICD  box to help me so once DS found out it was life threatening,he really felt like we should go on to Mx for repair,so we did.

It was only going to take two staples to fix the hernia and I had been toying with the idea of converting to the DS for a while. It seemed like a waste of a trip to MX and an anesthesia event ,NOT to get the DS while I was having surgery anyway,so I bit the bullet.

This time around has been different than post op with my VSG. I am having more trouble with energy being low and having a hard time eating enough. pre DS,I was down to eating dense protein, eggs and healthy fat with a few greens and NO dairy cause I found out it was stopping my weight loss. After stopping dairy,I was able to lose 6# in 6 months but that was all. there feels like a bit of guilt since eating so much dairy now,but i am forcing myself, lol.

Things I had not thought would be different are totally different. Post VSG I could not drink plain water, had to at least have lemon in it. Post DS,I can only drin**** cold water with nothing in it. I lost my hunger permanently after the VSG and still am not hungry and my sleeve has a lot of restriction. it always has had more restriction when I was sick or recovering so  was kinda expecting that. I REALLY don't want to eat. I didn't want to eat post VSG either but was able to make myself eat anyway. Post DS,it has been harder to make myself eat,but I am trying and trying to remember I am only 3 weeks out, too.

The bowel issue has been, interesting,to say the least. i eat no carbs since I am addicted to them,so gas hasn't been much of an issue. the smell of the poo is not bad but it is strange looking. TMI. I don't think I will have trouble with loose bowels since I am already back on my bowel regimen from VSG days,as I was getting constipated.

S

o all in all,I am pleased. I have lost 12 # since I started the pre op diet so can't complain. Even am having the infamous 3 week stall, who would have thought I would have it again, but I guess new surgery new stall.

Thank you all for the wonderful info you provide here. it has been invaluable to me already and I look forward to posting with you. I read more than I post since if you read you find out all kinds of stuff.

Hey Holly!

I'm a 2nd stage DS too. It's a slower weight loss for me then when I first got sleeved but it's steady - I had my surgery on 12/5 and I'm down an additional 28 pounds - which helped me hit my 100 pound milestone! yay!

The bathroom issues are still something I'm figuring out. The food was easier since my tummy was already healed - but getting used to eating fat is something I struggled with at first... now I'm all about full fat cheese!

Can't wait to hear about your continuing journey!

Jenny

hey Jenny,

thanks and yeah, I thought my tummy issues would be nil too since i had a mature sleeve, but ya never know. My weight loss was always slow, even early with the VSG so i am used to that. I have already lost more with the Ds in 3 weeks than I was able to lose in thew second two years of my sleeve so yeah,I am pleased and ok with that.

Will b watching your journey too.
