Age When You Got the DS

I was looking to read something like this. I think I recognize you from another board, and I am the age you got your surgery. And, your post only reinforced why this is the right time to get it. Like you, I am lower BMI. My weight hovers between 200-210, sometimes going down to 190. I am 5'4. But, the Pre-Diabetes, Insulin resistance and PCOS (And Hashimoto's..we couldn't be more similar lol) are not going to get any better with age. A healthy and complication free pregnancy is another reason why I want to go for this procedure now rather than later. Even if I were to lose the weight( 80 pounds or so) with diet and exercise as I have multiple times, there's no way to know if my Pre-D would have progressed to full blown diabetes or not. There are too many unknowns. Some slim people with Pre-D progress to Diabetes within 10-15 years. So, it's looking it's best to get the DS now.

I had mine a month ago.  I'm 43.  I wish I had the surgery ten years ago.  But to be quite honest, I am not sure I would have been able to handle it at that time in my life.

I'm focusing on life's possibilities from this point forward. Should-ing on myself isn't helpful at this point.

I'm looking forward to being able to swim without feeling self conscious, to having more energy and mobility to travel. The list is long.

My surgeon recommends waiting at least 18 months post-op before becoming pregnant with the DS.

I hate, absolutely hate, to say this but I'm always honest....there seems to be a difference between a lovely lady in her mid 50s having DS vs someone in their 20s or 30s.

I'm curious as to what you've observed to come to this conclusion (other that the ability to reproduce).

FWIW, I was 57. I'm now 62.  I'm not a scientist so I would not hazard a guess as to what age is best for a DS or an other WLS for that matter.  There are too many variables involved with an individuals personal and family history.

I had my DS at 51.  I think we ladies who are solidly middle aged, and qualify for senior discounts tend to be fleshier than the 20-30-40 something's who get the DS.  We also tend to have less muscle mass, so it's a little tougher to firm up. Also, skin has less elasticity, so we tend to have more loose skin. There are exeptions, but that has everything to do with genes, and not with age.

I was a month shy of 56.  I'll be 5 yrs out next month.  I figure that the DS gave me back at least the 15 yrs that I would have lost to diabetes.

I think JessyW is the youngest getting a DS - I think she'd just turned 17 when her mom took her to Brazil.  Check out her profile or catch her on FB in the DS group.

Looks like I am the oldest to post here -granted mine was a revision. i had the RNY at 55 and the DS at 62. I am  9 days out and have waited so long to do this that I am sure I won't have any regrets. I am sure there will be difficulties that pop up - just no regrets.
