Pre-op vs Post-op Food Tastes

I had my surgery on 2/28.  It's been smooth sailing so far.  But I've found my food tastes have changed quite a bit from my pre-surgery likes and dislikes.  I had lost nearly 60 pounds pre-surgery, having a normal container of Fage 2% or whole milk yogurt each morning for breakfast.  I could also stomach protein powders with sucralose, such as Syntrax.  Now I cannot seem to stomach either.  And I'm having a hard time getting enough protein.

Yesterday I discovered I could stomach pure unflavored whey isolate powder, with some unsweetened cocoa powder and a tiny pinch of stevia mixed with Lactaid milk. So I think I'm good to go with shakes. But I'd love to find a substitute for the Fage. It tastes too thick, sweet, and sour to me.  Has anybody else had this issue and similar reactions?

This is totally normal, which is why I advise not to spend much money on protein powders until you decide you like something as a post op first.  I do have a trick with the Greek yogurt, though.  Add some heavy cream to it and the sour aftertaste disappears.  Heavy cream is very low in lactose, and I tolerate it where I cannot with milk.

I am going with unflavored protein. My Surgeon sells it.  I will just add it to whatever I eat. Textures do not bother me much so that is my plan.

VERY VERY common!

That is why you shouldn't by any protein till after surgery because your taste buds are very cranky. This period will end though:) there is light at the end of the tunnel!

I had my surgery last October and have had the same issue.  There were very few things I ate before that I could tolerate after - I am amazed at how many things still don't taste good to me.  Something I hadn't really understood before the surgery.

Anyway,  keep trying different things and you will find what works.  Now that I am 5 months out I can finally eat cheese and  yogurts are tasting good again - I have tried adding the whipped cream to it and LOVE that suggestion!!  It has helped me a lot.

I am starting to tolerate eggs now but had to try them in many different styles.  Deviled works better than straight scrambled - can't explain why, just my weird new tastes!  I also don't know why, but Pure Protein and Extreme Protein pre-made drinks taste good, but homemade protein drinks - not so much.  It is an evolving thing - just be patient and keep trying things.

Good luck!
