I haven't heard of anyone getting them from vitamins. Are you on meds for acid and ulcers yet?

i am taking carafate. i had a script from when i was really sick in the summer with gastritis. cant get into my gastro dr. till march 31st! im going this week to my internist to see what he recommends until i can get to gastro dr. i am almost out of this med.

i had 9 ulcers one time before my surgery so i know ulcer pain. this feels exactly like it.

i wasnt sure if vitamins were acidic or stomach disturbing, thus my post!

thanks for the post!

It sounds like you're just prone to ulcers, unfortunately.  I would assume the same rules apply for ulcers as you had for the 9 ulcers you had before your DS.  I second the practice of acid reducers, and discontinue all NSAIDS if applicable.

Twice I have had to discontinue my vitamins because of pain. The first time, after eliminating all foods and vitamins, and slowly adding things back to my diet, I found it was due to the citrical petites. I had read about people having similar problems because of the coating on the tablet. The pain was horrible about one hour after I took my vites. I prepared my husband initially for a possible blockage, and kept a constant vigil as to how I was feeling. Once I cut back to protein only, the pain went away. I have never had an ulcer, so I cant compare it to that kind of pain.

Recently, it happened again. I stopped my vites for about three weeks (I would have started back up at two weeks but I was working out of town and didnt want to deal with the pain again). I have been taking all my vites again without problem. I have two that are in pill form with a coating that I've been breaking in half before taking.

After my first painful episode, I've switched to mostly capsules.

I also wonder if pistachios may be the culprit, or perhaps caused some additional irritation. I usually dont buy them but I found a bag at Sams. I may have to retest that out tonight now that my stomach is handling my vites well.

With your history of ulcers, you should probably get it checked. Otherwise, at a minimum, eliminate foods/vites and slowly add them back in....only if your vite levels are good to begin with.

And one more thing. Look at the packaging of your sleep medication and see if it causes stomach irritation. I cant take eurthromyocin (sp?) and another drug because of the horrid stomach pains it gives me. Because of the timing of the drugs and the pain, I knew the drugs were the culprit.

are you taking vitalady regime or dr. l's recommeded vites? yes, i did check sleep med and it has ulcers as a side effect. i cant sleep without it. i have been on them before and it never bothered my stomach. the only 'new' thing i have added is all these vitamins thats why i was curious if anyone else experienced them.

I didn't realize we had the same surgeon!

I follow Vitalady's regime and get some vites from her and some from other sources. I had my labs drawn at about one year and four months and everything looked good, except my Bs were high, so I have reduced Vitalady's recommended amounts. I also changed my calcium and no longer take calcium citrate. I take Bone Booster Complex.

The coating on some vitamins really bother some people and others recommend pill cutters to help absorb the vitamin quicker. For me, when I had the pain with the calcium caltrate petites, I felt like something was stuck in the pylorus valve, not that I would really know what that felt like! That's my own diagnosis. But the pain always started about one hour after I took them.

My own opinion, and others might disagree, is to stop all your vites for a week and see if you still have pain. Cut back to protein only and add foods back slowly.

I'd be happy to send you my vitamin regime but my computer crashed last week. I should get it back tomorrow.
