Constipation

all of the above, this is one of the things they dont tell you about the DS, it hard to get out of the old diet state of mind of low fat eating, people always look at me strange went i eat butter in my food, eggs and bacon. i use heavy cream in my coffee and protein shakes, i am rarely constipated and if i am its because i missed a vit dosage with magnesium oxide, execerise and did not drink enough water or did not eat a meal with enough fat. i have even taken shots of olive oil ( because its more tasty). you definately don't want problems with a fissure or hemerroids.

Some people add butter (regular REAL butter) to their coffee...I haven't tried that one but it's an option. Drink a spoon of olive oil (pretend it's medicine which it is in a way).

Make sure you aren't eating low fat...hard to do with yogurt since all I can find in this area is low fat (2%) or no fat.

You will have your magic point...remember normies need 30 grams to stay healthy...we need about 5 times that amount. And an entire stick of butter is ONLY 92 grams of fat...

Looks like we had our surgeries about the same time.  I had my first horrible bout of constipation shortly after I started all my vitamins, and I thought I had worked out my diet to keep things moving.  Had another recurrence this week, and it's been horrible.  I agree with you that worrying about it tends to take over your life.

I started taking magnesium oxide last time, so I've increased my dosage of those pills to three each day.  Plus a dose of Miralax first thing every morning, and four stool softener pills at the end of the day.  Plus I eat butter with everything (fried my sausage in butter this week).

Here is the "formula" from Vita Lady that I have adapted:

My final constipation formula (from Vitalady):
1 serving MiraLax
4 stool softeners at night
1 mag ox with lunch, 1 with dinner
In the morning, hot beverage first thing on empty gut

Still looking for my trigger food!  Plenty of foods that give me gas, but none yet that make me poo!!

My doc told me it was perfectly safe to take a maintenance dose of Miralax everyday.  I eat lots of butter and fluids, too.

I've had a fissure before and was not able to heal without LIS surgery.  I second what everyone said, but have not had luck with just increasing fat, etc.  For immediate relief:

I'd start with adding a dose of miralax in the morning and at night.  It helped way better than the stool softener capsules for me.  Once you get it a good, very soft consistency so there's not so much trauma with each trip, you can begin to adjust how much you take to slightly firm things up as you heal.  Keeping it too, too soft can be bad after a while because you want the muscle to still be able to stretch as it heals.

Increase your water intake, start using benefiber, etc., perhaps in your morning shake and from there you can concentrate on finding your trigger foods and a regular regimen that will protect you long-term from constipation.  It may take a while to find your perfect regimen.  For me, it's about a 1/2 dose of miralax nightly dissolved in about 3 oz of cherry juice, chased with a tall glass of water.

My fissure was during the last months of 2011, but it was such an awful experience I'm still apprehensive and fearful of it happening again.  Perhaps after another year, I'll be adventurous enough to see if other things like just increasing fat, upping water, etc. may be enough to keep me straight.  For now, miralax is my best friend.  Hope you get some relief.
