I had the BPDDS a little over 2 years. My AEK levels are ok and I've brought my vitamin D up to 21.5 and rising. However I've had an two unexpected complications. 1. I am always hungry. I dropped 110+ pounds and I am maintaining but I am hungry until it hurts. 2. I have had 2 bouts of pancreatitis. The first in July where I was hospitalized for 23 days. The latest happened two weeks ago and I was in the hospital 9 days. Anybody else have this. BTW. I don't drink, smoke or have high cholesterol (105) or high triglycerides (175-250)

I've heard of a couple people who had this post-op but it's not common.  If you are hungry, eat!  Just eat the right things, protein foods.

My Mama did not have the DS but she did have pancreatitis.  Hers was from being so stopped up with stool that the stool literally was backed up and irritated her pancreas.  Any chance you are backed up with feces?

The first time there was no back up.  The 2nd time, I was taking pain medication and anti-inflammatory caused a small baowel obstruction.  Now 3 weeks out of the hospital, my Lipase is again elevated. This is frustrating.

Hi Mhdemant,

I had infectious necrotizing pancreatitis as a result of my DS back in 2011.

It actually developed as a result of my DS surgery and irritation to my pancreas due to scar tissue. My pancreatitis developed within 5 days of my DS surgery and kept me in the hospital/ICU/rehab for months.

I was told the pancreas is extremely sensitive and any trauma near or around the pancreas can cause pancreatitis. I am sorry you have had to suffer through this, I know first hand how awful it is.

Best wishes and big hugs to you. I hope you don't have any more flare ups with this; it is dreadful!

Thanks. It really stinks. Pancreatitis was an unexpected side effect. I think I know when it's coming on now after two bouts. Clear liquids usually does the trick and I get tested for lipase every month. Now I'm dealing with the hemmaroids from the overuse of the bathroom. Still I wouldn't change my decision lost 130 pounds and counting. 60 more to goal. Hopefully it's not reached with another bout of pancreatitis.
