I started my Journey Io getting My DS. I am so very excited. My insurance company required me to Take some nutritional Meetings before I get approved. So now I am Just Waiting to be approved.  I don’t feel like the nutritionist is being very helpful when it comes to my Vitamin intake for after the DS. I believe it’s because they sell their own Vitamins and Protein shakes/Items That I would be expected to buy. I know that I can buy much more for Far Less elsewhere. I am a couponer.  Not the extreme kind.

When I Asked about the vitamins This is what I Was I was told to take.

Multi-Vitamin                                        1 daily

Calcium Caltrate                                    3 daily

Vitamin D 3                       1,000 IU       1 daily

Vitamin B-12  Sublingual 2,500 mcg   1 weekly

Iron                         60 mg           1 daily

And

Protein  90-100 Grams Daily

Besides this information I’m Not sure what else I’m going to need Because, compared to other plans this just sounds like the minimum. Also on line I read “Do not take calcium with iron-these should be taken 2 hours apart” Which I wasn’t told by the nutritionist. A few other questions:

What type of the vitamins are best Softgel, tablets, chewables?

I was told I would only need a week before my surgery to do Liquid diet, I’ve seen other have to do 2 weeks. Should I do 2 weeks anyway? Liquid diet with 75 grams protein daily. Besides Shakes how is this done?

Thank So Much for the Help

Where do you live and who is your doc?

No, you don't need a 2 week liquid diet.  Even one week is excessive.

You need a lot more vites than this.  Take a look at Vitalady's DS pack and start there.  Avoid anything gel/fat based and just get regular pills.  You don't need 'special' expensive vites or shakes bought from your doc's office.  I usually buy from Puritan when they have their buy one get two free sale.

Hang out here and read.  You will learn a lot!

^^^What she said!

As to the recommended for a DS'er...the surgeons do NOT understand. They are excellent cutters, lousy nutritionists and most of the NUTS have RNY on the brain or NORMAL!

Anyway, here is the vitalady info:

Oh, and the D has to be dry...and Vitalady has the same brand you can find on Amazon...by Bio-Tech. 50,000 IU and taken daily, not weekly.

After your three month labs, you can adjust as needed to fit YOUR labs.

My surgeon on required a two day clear liquid pre-op diet, and that was basically just to clean out the digestive track (nothing with red food coloring, etc.)  Don't want to operate on someone who's got a colon full of waste. But every surgeon is different.  In general, though, there's a lot of talk about fatty livers, but I don't think that a week or two of dieting is going to have that great of an effect on the liver.

As far as vitamins, for immediate post-op, I was told 2 multis/day, 1800 mg of calcium citrate, D3 (2000 IU) and Vitamin A.  Then after we do the first post-op lab work, we'll go back and add what I need specifically.  I also take extra Bs, specifically a B Complex and B-12, because I already started with really thin hair and I'm trying to hedge any hair loss, and besides, you pee out most of what you don't need of B vitamins.

I would be VERY wary of a doctor who is pushing vitamin and protein sales.  I want a doctor who's about good care, not about making big money.  That being said, you could always buy an initial started pack of vites from the doctor and read the labels, and then shop around.  But what you take should be based on what you need as per your lab results, not based on what is profitable for your surgeon to sell.

And make sure to get a list of the labs they are performing.  You'll need to follow up with labs the rest of your life, and you probably won't be seeing this surgeon for long if you're not buying more of his wares.

My surgeon recommended a two week liquid diet, to help shrink a potentially fatty liver, making maneuvering around it during surgery less risky.

I had a friend whose son died during DS surgery , because when they used the liver retractors, they went right through, due to the fat in his liver.

With regard to vitamins, chewables (NOT gummies) and tablets are DS friendly.  I was advised against softgels, because they may also be oil-based.  No oil-filled capsules either.  These are usually OTC forms of ADE and K.  All of those vites we take must be in dry form, since we malabsorb oil and fat.
