Hi All--Just wondering when it is decided what vitamins we have to take, I am seeing Dr. Greenbaum next week to sign all my paperwork and all and just wondering if he should give me the list then or after the surgery? I would like to have everything in house before surgery so I am all set.

Thanks

I have no idea what his vitamin plan will be.  Every surgeon has a different plan and 99% of the are terrible.  They can cut but they don't know diddly about what it takes to be healthy post-DS.

VitaLady has a plan that successful/healthy DSers tend to follow and then tweak based on their complete/frequent labs.

She has a starter pack which I did not use.  I just started off slowly and built up so that by 2 months out or so I was taking what she suggested and then starting with my 3 month labs I started tweaking her plan until I now have my own personalized plan.

I got labs quarterly the first 2 years and get them twice a year now.  They are extremely comprehensive labs and I get help from the lab gurus here on this forum to determine how I can tweak for the best benefit.

You do not have to take chewable vitamins by the way.  I was taking pills before I left the hospital.

So they don't do any labs before we leave the hospital? The nut told me to take Flinstones chewables and I have no idea why since they are for kids not adults, can't figure out why it is so hard for the nuts and dr's to know about this stuff. Thanks for your help going to check out her starter pack this weekend. :)

That is the perfect example of them not knowing diddly.  It's time to nod and smile and learn how to care for yourself on your own.

I know when she said that I remembered what was posted her and just smiled.

Well there you have it.  You have a serious, costly surgery and are given follow-up advice that could literally kill you.  It is too common and it really ticks me off.

VitaLady saves our lives, literally.  Her and the lab experts who will share their experience if you post your complete labs.

Flintstones chewables?  Gah!  WTF?

You know, Centrum makes chewable multis.

At my surgeon's, they gave me a list of the vitamins that they suggested at 2 weeks before surgery, along with a sample pack of vitamins and an Unjury sample.

I've seen other Greenbaum patients post his vitamin recommendations and I wasn't impressed at all. He is a great surgeon but the nutritional side is so-so.  He also likes to scare people that get close to the middle of a normal BMI, threatening reversal or digestive enzymes to slow down your weight loss. The best advice I can give is let your body get as low as it can as fast as it can, the bounce back will bring you back up to where you will most likely like to stay.

Here are a few Vitalady links that might be helpful. The DS plan is the one with DRNY_ERNY_BPDDS in the title.
